What's normal oil consumption for a 4.0 Chim?

I seem to have got through a full sump of Mobil 1 in 3 months. I've checked the engine bay thoroughly and no sign of a leak. Is this normal consumption and does the rating (Mobil-1 being 0W40) have any effect on it? It does get taken for a few short runs per week (I do some proper mileage at the weekends) so I'm sure that's a factor, but it still seems a bit excessive to me.

It seems to depend on the oil being used - our car used virtually none at all (with unknown oil) but when it was serviced and Mobil 1 (15w-50) put in, it started using some oil - not much but I reckon about 3-5mm on the dipstick per 1000 miles.

If you are using 0w-40 Mobil 1, it`ll probably get through that quicker - I might try Magnatec next time.

Mine used some oil when on Mobil 1, went over to Castrol RS, has not used any since!

Mine has a sump full of Mobil-1 0W40, does around 15k miles a year and uses about half a litre of oil a month.... so whassat, about half a litre or so every 1000 miles... roughly speaking. It's a 4.0HC if that make any difference.

My car came with Mobil 15W/50, and recommended by the dealer (Fernhurst) and have I always used it since. Must have got through a bit less than 1 litre in 6000miles.

But they all seem to vary, some use more than others. Not sure if that is a good or bad thing.

There seems to be quite a difference in Mobil-1 viscosities...I'd presume the lower visco oils are burnt up quicker. Do I really need 0W40 or is a higher visco oil as good for the engine? Within reason, I'd rather have the best for the engine and worry about cost later.
