Replacing Rear Lights (with pics)
Discussion
So after purchasing a pair of the newer style rear light pods last month off of eBay, Me and PH member DHUDD last night went to work to get them fitted!
So far one side 90% complete and very happy with the outcome
Here's a few photos to show our progress.
This is the set I bought from eBay

Bit of filling and sanding then primer

Painted silver

Holes drilled for lights just a bit of filing needed after initial drill

My original lights before removal

Fiesta lights and lenses after removal

This pic shows the original light cluster frame which is part of the fiber glass body.. This needs to
be cut out to allow the newer lights to be fitted. Scary!

No going back from here, Cutting out the light cluster frame.

view from inside after fibre glass has been cut

After light cluster frame has been cut out. Just needs a bit more trimming until new light unit will fit.

fixing new unit into place

Fixing in lights units and rewiring (this pic was taken before fiberglassing into place as more trimming was required)

All in and tested, just need some black silicone to get the transparent lenses back in, Tape will have to do for now

Old VS New

So thats how far we got last night hopefully we will have the other side completed tonight all very exciting!
one more pic to follow to show final results

Hey graeme, In fact this has ending up been a very reasonably priced upgrade with the pods including all the lights only costing me £94, on top of that Ive had to buy and locate reflectors £7,
Then just the primer and paint, fiberglass and some black silicone. So approx £130!
Luckily I have a friend who is pretty handy with the grinder.
Regards the electrics we pulled the original connector block from the cables and crimped them to the corresponding new lights, Fairly straight forward.
There are other alternatives out there which just fit in. But in my opinion you cant beat the look of the later lights

Yes, I am fitting them to my Chim. I changed the config of the lights so I had two LED rings and deleted the relector rings, and I will have a fog and reverse light on each side. I like to complicate matters!R
The pods come in matt black and can be fitted as is, and there is no need to hack away bodywork. I chose to spray mine body colour though, and I also sprayed the surrounding bodywork where it was also matt black (ie those bits that were hacked off by the OP).
I also took care to make sure the backs of the lights are well sealed as I don't want condensation getting in, so I made some gaskets from rubber sheet to fill any gaps, and also used copious amounts of clear silicone sealant.
The pods are very thin, especially at the back with the lights removed, but with the lights in place they are fine.
Not all back together yet as I am doing lots of other jobs at the same time. I'll post pics when I get the chance.

So do you not have a reflector at all now ?. I was planning something similar, I was going to put the side lights in with the Fog lights so that the stop light is on its own, just like they are on some other cars.Gassing Station | Chimaera | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
