Bought my very first TVR (a 400 '99 Chimaera)in May 2011 with a confirmed mileage of 6472.
My car still has the original Br'stone SO2 Pole Position tyres on it which are in execellent condition with lots of tread left. At a recent TVR meet someone said that these tyres are very hard and don't offer that much grip and I may be better off replacing them with Toyo's ?? I know SO2's aren't available any more but Steve Heath advocates these tyres as being the best for the car. Due to their age should I be looking at new rubber ?? rotate

I'd be looking at replacing them. When I got the Cerbera the tyre tread had loads left, but they kept going down (SO2's too) They were very old and air was seeping out of the hardened rubber.

I would, rubber does degrade over time and after 12 years it won't be as soft, grippy or pliable as fresh tyres.
Thats a lovely looking car you have BTW.

Pair of rear tyres (Toyo's) on classifieds, look like a bargain whistle

Look very closely at the sidewalls and inbetween the treads - I wouldn't be surprised if you can start to see fine cracks starting to develop. I would certainly change them - some mid range price rubber would be better than risking it with those old tyres IMHO.

That looks like a real nice car mate..Mine is getting a bit tatty like many others ...looks like its been kept in a museum !

I would get your tyre`s from Camskill good price and you could get someone local to fit..about five to ten quid corner..

Toyos are a good option but i think overpriced ,they are only a bugget tyre`s and were prity cheap a few years back..

Nice car!

Anyone tried KUMHO ESCA SPORT..becoming very popular..

Hi there, love that car. Saw you on the drive out to Corbridge the other weekend. Sherwood green Chim with a westie in the back!

I would definitely replace those tyres. They will have degraded over the time they have been on the car and will not grip well now and as said will be brittle. I have a set of Toyo Proxes T1-Rs on mine, very popular fit. When these were fitted I noticed a great improvement in ride quality, less tyre noise, better wet and dry grip too. Makes me feel more confident in the car, especially in the wet. This rubber is the only thing between you and the road.

Thanks for your comments re. car. I am third owner and previous owner bought it from his friend who bought it new from Brundle; Kings Lynn as "a company car" ! ... but then hardly used it. Currently got 8457 miles on it after tonight.Have taken on board comments re. new rubber so will be looking. Thanks for all advice.
p.s. Just been out for a blat and noticed the dials getting condensation inside. Mind it was a chilly evening and I did have roof off and windows down ??
