Hi all,

I have put my chimaera in the garage due to a starting issue and some minor work but they have come back informing me the chassis is rotten both sides and needs welding/treatment. The wishbones are both gone and the shock abs are dangerously bad too.

The car hasn't been used for a little while due to a new member in the family so it got neglected for a little while.

As you can imagine I am not a happy bunny and the quote I have been given is out of my price range and probably more than the cost of the car - So a write off.

Any ideas on my options before I try to get rid as scrap frown

Thanks all

I'm assuming then it's more than just outriggers that have gone. Sounds like the only proper option would be a body off refurb which is expensive (circa 4k IIRC) but a 98 R plate Chim has to be worth 9k so presumably the quote you've had is around this figure?

Any decent welder will be able to do the outriggers for a few hundred quid. (Specialists charge £1500. yikes ) Wishbones are a few hundred quid & just bolt on. You'd be best paying them for the original work you had done, taking it home & shopping around a bit, take your time.

Thanks for all your replies so far. Its very much appreciated.

I have been quoted £1900+VAT for the chassis work to be done. Which I was told is a "body off" task.

Wishbones replacement approx £450+VAT

Shocks at £300+VAT

They even said my headlamp reflectors aren't roadworthy and said £300+VAT for a set of those.

As you can imagine I am very cheesed off and in a state of shock with all this hence me asking you all for any help.

sportmotive will do a chassis rail job without taking the body off...1300 if i recall correctly (but of course you may have other issues within the 1900). shocks at 300 are about right, 300 for headlamps reflectors is very steep....

new wishbones are that sort of money, though you could recondition yours for much less, if the rust is only surface....

It does seem like the rust has gotten hold, and will need a couple of thousand to repair if you have a garage do the work...

+1 on other comments. See my chassis thread for some inspiration on wishbone and shock replacement, it can be done at reasonable cost. I have very good spare upper wishbones and standard shocks that will clean up ok too that I was going to ebay if you need any. If you can give some more details on the outrigger issue we can advise more on that smile

450 is too cheap to replace all four wishbones as it will cost nearly 400 in parts so I guess you need some lower ones, to the uninitiated these can look pretty scrap even if they are ok!
