Best fuel hose and correct bore sizes please
Discussion
Hi PHers,
I have fuel leaking from the rear fuel feed hose that connects to the copper. Going to replace all pipes. Anyone got opinions on the best fuel pipe to use. I don't like braided as experience has shown them to be dangerous as they look good from the outside but what you can't see if the badly cracked rubber inner pipe. So I'm going for plain rubber.
Racetech do OEM fuel hose in I/D sizes of 7.3mm and 12mm at approx £15 per m.
Then there's Demon tweaks (recommended on another thread) with FSE high pressure hose at £4.67 per m but only in 6, 8 and 10mm bore.
The other confusion is other threads talk of tank-to-pump pipe with 10mm I/D and 12mm O/D, contradicting the 12mm I/D that Racetech sells as OEM for the Chimaera.
Cheers for any help,
Matt

Found this, has an I/D close to that of the OEM stuff, has textile reinforcement in the rubber and good for 225psi:

Any good ?

I guess if you're changing the pump, you'll need different sizes than my stock setup though anyhow. Thanks.
I guess the fuel clips can take up a bit of difference so better to go large than too small else the engine may get starved at high rpm ?
The hosing is the same, hence the adaptors.I guess the fuel clips can take up a bit of difference so better to go large than too small else the engine may get starved at high rpm ?

Is that a uprated pump and where did you get it from ?
Fuelpumpsonline IIRC£149 for the pump + £39 for a fancy bracket and extra for banjo and adaptor.
Think it came to £223 delivered. Not cheap but necessary for me.
I am also getting a decent Weber Alpha regulator for £90.
These will be fitted on Friday and the MS remapped to suit.

There is no question that the very top of the line is Aeroquip fuel hose. It is made of Teflon (which will last a lifetime and does not burn) and covered with a stainless sheath that prevents chafing (though) other coverings are available. I agree with you on rubber lines of any type. Over time, all other flexible lines will age, harden, rub through and/or rot. Ticking time bombs. The downside is that you need to add AN fittings throughout. Teflon fuel line is not clampable. However, once done, you cannot figure how you lived without it.

Took a look at their website. A bewildering number of options on there. I think you're right that stuff looks like it would last a lifetime, prices aren't too much higher than some of the cotton over-braids too. Think some reading is required.

What is a banjo and why do you need to spend so much money on a pump..£149 for the pump + £39 for a fancy bracket and extra for banjo and adaptor.

The banjo is the 90 degree fitting on the left Daz.The pump isnt cheap because its high quality and high spec. I dont want to scrimp on the fuel supply when using nitrous.
I do have a fuel pressure cut off on the system as a safety back up also.

Nice bit of kit, pity its not on show ! Don`t the standard one cope with up and over 400hp..The pump isnt cheap because its high quality and high spec. I dont want to scrimp on the fuel supply when using nitrous.

To close this topic off and for future searches by PHers, I thought it would be useful to add what I found having completed the job last night:
Main hose fitted was 8mm bore. This fits over the pump and filter fittings and onto the solid pipe very nicely.
Silicone spray is very helpful at getting the hose clips over the hose and the hose onto the fittings as others have posted.
The hose I fitted was plain rubber with an inner strengthening braid. apprx £3.50 per metre.
Quite difficult to get at the hose ends that fit to the filter when working from axle stands. Found it best to loosen the filter clamp and slide the filter out of the clamp to get better access to either end.
Note that there is quite a lot of fuel in that filter and every time you move it some more comes out of the hoses that you think you've drained.
Dropped the ARB and the exhaust shield to get better access.
One of the hose clips wouldn't loosen so had to drill through it using a series of holes.
The hose clamps I used were from Halfords (labelled 12-14mm but actually 11-13mm when opened the box - nice), very tight fit, 12-14mm would have been much better, although this will depend on the OD of the hose you buy.
