Returned from Le Mans with no alternator or fans
Discussion
Had problem with fans not coming on last friday in arnage. i checked relays, fuses and shorted otter switch which was fine.
I had previously fitted an override switch which was now also not working.
The battery charge light was glowing intermittantly and then the battery failed.
charged batt and bought a replacement but still no fans which was worrying now some 600 miles into France via Calais.
On the return trip we managed to keep car moving and only when temp guage reached plus 95-100 did I pull over and wait for the coolant to cool.
The batt light seemed to diminish a bit and the car fired up ok...but still no fans.
I just wonder if there wasnt enough current to trip the relay on?
In arnage we checked the battery and output of the alternator which only showed 12.4v and diminished under load.
Having taken the regulator apart I could see that the rear bush was not seated correctly on the rotor and that it was wearing badly.
An amazing trip back and even had a gendarme escort down the hard shoulder to the payage booth.
I have never spent so much time watching a temp gauge and forward planning traffic conditions.. Until I got on the M25 from the M20 and got stuck before an accident. Again used the hard shoulder albeit with a shower of abuse from fellow countrymen..

Don't know the answer to your problem but one thing I can tell you for sure is that if there is enough current to crank the engine there is more than enough to make two fans go.

Yep i`m the one....even spoke to Peter Wheeler and Jason at the tvr centre who offered to speak with the pit crew altough it was some 3 hours before the race.
They didnt want to disturb the mechanics but offered to help once the race was underway.
The car is silverstone silver L reg a rare 500 Jan 94
last four digits on plate 1100
griff 500 engine fitted on the production line.
Seems odd that the engine cranks and still no fans even with a poor alternator???
