Did a couple of jobs to the Chim yesterday and one thing that has always bugged me is how dirty the vinyl on the hood frame is. I have tried many leather cleaners over the last year with little or no sucess until now.

I used normal household Cif (formally Jif) with a damp cloth and it worked a treat so i thought I would be useful to share

1. Apply Cif with a damp cloth or leather cleaning brush
2. Wipe off with kitchen towel to remove dirt
3. Reapply with a different cleaner cloth and dry with terry towel
4. Apply Leather conditioner to add the supplety back

I'd be careful with Cif. I used Jif (as it was called) once on vinyl seats in a classic car and whilst it did a great job and changed their colour completely (they were really dirty) after a while they went hard / brittle and cracked pretty badly. Can't say for sure but the Jif seemed to be the cause.

It did go quite stiff, but thats the same with most leather cleaner i have used. I think you just need to ensure that you use plently of leather feed to restore the suppleness

or do as the trade (and by trade I mean detailers not dealers) go and buy some cheap own brand APC and dilute it down, this can be used on anything from carpet to bodywork and combine with a nail brush and is abit kinder to the surface the something like CIF, though I would be TOO worried about drying it out, its vinyl, not leather, leather feed will have pretty much no effect as it wont get through the paint nor do much as it isnt leather.

the best thing i ever found for cleaning vinyl and leather has been the good old magic sponge and clean water - works a treat - think the JML version (in Wilkinsons) is called Doktor Power Magic Eraser - it works brilliantly.

I use Meg's APC and having bought Mrs Johno a motor for tazzing round Paris I gave it a full detail, the interior is leather and vinyl and looking tatty. She comes down to the garage armed with everything from under the sink and I present her with diluted APC some brushes and a couple of mf's.

She scoffs, then spends an hour with it and declares it a miracle cure, now I have to fight to keep her away from it, carpets, vinyl, leather and makes a alright clay lube, excellent stuff.

there is a clay bar (name passes me by this early in the morning) which is the only one that work with just plain water as lube and I have found to work much better than the megs one. I have also heard there isnt much difference bar the smell between the branded APC and the tesco value/morrisons etc stuff which is like 50p or something for a bottle

Really depends on the state of paint, how much polishing it will need anyway and whether doing with already wet paint. I found it very good at 1 in 4 on wet paint, just after washing for example. I also keep lay lube handy if needed ...

Difficulty is ever knowing the differences. Meg's APC and others are professional products produced for use by professionals or amateurs like me who get their hands in it. I therefore trust it and long term has not caused me any issues, others may have found this with cheapernalte rnatives, but my experience of all these things isnyou end up back with the decent stuff often ... It's the things like the conditioners that are contained in quality APC's that last whereas the cheaper all day cleaners are just that, cleaners only and contribute little I think to the longer term condition of carpets, vinyl etc. But again, I'm only an a mature at these things . . .

Bilt Hamber clay bars require only tap water to lubricate:

That's the stuff, used this after already using the megs bar and it fetched off quite abit more and found it nice and easy to use and no need for lube is always good!
