Wont start when hot problem

I have been having the "wont start when hot problem" for some time. At first it was now and again it would happen and the car would start after 10-15mins, this problem is getting progressively worse and happening more and more frequently and each time it takes longer to start up again. Last night I pulled up at a petrol station after a run on the motorway filled up and got back in the car to start it and nothing, fuel pump primed but the car would not turn over..it took just over an hour before it would start again. I'm looking for some advice on the best way to tackle this...any of you guys can point me in the right direction as to what I should do would be appreciated.

Due to the cost of reconditioning starter motor & cost of heat shields, I can recommend the prestolite starter motor from Paddock at only £50 + vat. Just treat it as a consumable at that price! I think several members have fitted this unit and not heard anything negative (sounds nice as well when it spins over).

Hi,
On my merry way to Thames Valley Race tech this morning for an Service, MOT and everything else, stopped at a petrol station against my better judgement as I didn't want to leave it with no juice for the guys at TVRt.
Guess what....
Its seemed pretty chronic, thankfully one of the guys came round and in the end they used their Range Rover to bump it going.
Bloody annoying tho'

Now just have to wait for the diagnosis and the bill.

The start motors seem to suffer from the heat. If you fit a heat shield they laster longer, but they still won't last forever. The normal symptoms are the starter doesn't engage when you turn the key when the engine is hot. Often, it happens gradually so one day there will be a slight hesitation before the starter engages, then it gets worse and worse. In the early stages you may find that the starter will eventually cut in if you hold the key in the 'starting' position for long enough, and if this doesn't work they a usually better when things have cooled down (so pop the bonnet open to cool it quicker). Eventually if you ignore the warning signs the starter motor will completely fail though.

Thanks for the info.
Do you have a part number for the prestolite starter motor?
I have just been looking on Paddock's website and theres lots of different ones. I have a Chim 500 on 99 T plate. Any help would good.

Well intentioned advice I'm sure, but these starter motors are cheap because they're cr*p. Had one fitted and it had insufficient cranking power - died after a few starts . I ended up paying two lots of labour to have the Prestolite motor fitted and removed and the full price for the proper Lucas part. You get what you pay for...
Ditto. Been here done this. I bought the Prestolite unit £50, Thames Valley Racetech bunged it on with a heatshield for £40 same afternoon. Quick fix to save waiting that hour is to get the watering can that you see at the garage forecourts and pour water liberaly over your knackered SM. Access under bonnet offside IIRC near exhaust manifolds. Works everytime. Prestolite unit is ace, cranks faster and makes a nicer sound - had no trouble at all with it.

But I have had the presolite starter on for over 6 months now with no problems (touches wood) I have only heared of two people who have had problems with them, At that price i thought it was worth a go as my Recon Bosch one lasted about a year??
