So this morning I found that the speedo and mileometer weren't working, then on the way home from work the car just died for some reason. Everything turned off except for the oil and battery lights, which turned on. The fact that I was going down a hill was a bit un-nerving as I lost use of the brakes! I survived though! Turned the ignition off and on again and it worked ok.

Could it be that this is in any way related to the speedo dial not working?

The only other time I experienced this cut-out was when a wire on the fuel pump came loose. It cut-out then in exactly the same way. Another feature that happened both than and today is that once cut-out if i pressed the throttle it would act like a brake and actually slow the car down.

Thoughts?

Like on your other thread it could be the speed transducer, it detects the speed of the car and transmits to the speedo but also to engine management and adjusts other items according to speed. so if its reading wrong or not at all it will affect the engine performance.

What you describe also sounds somewhat like a battery dieing, though you didn't say if it improved again?
And, when you turned the ignition off/on again, did you restart it with the battery, or effectively 'bump start' it as it was coasting?

As the battery charge lowers, and if the alternator is not doing it's job properly, the available juice to ignite the fuel mix drops. As speed/revs increase, more power is required to ignite the mix, so when you press on the throttle, power drops off rather than increasing.

It's a bit of a long shot, and I am making some assumptions...

If the above is the case, then check your 100 amp fuse. They have been know to partially work, when partially 'blown' and can then lead to battery discharge and poor recharge by the alternator.

In fact, check it anyway. You wouldn't believe the number of people who have bought batteries, alternators, and spent hours diagnosing because they didn't know about, or check the fuse first.

Check ignition relay & switch, sounds like dash supply is being intermittently cut ~ when oil & charge lights come back on your speedo should also work again (just like switching off & on again with the switch).

Renewing the dash + ignition fuses and cleaning them up may also help, loose fuses have been known to cause odd 'intermittent' gremlins.

I gave it to Str8six in the end!

Speedo was due to a failed transducer.

Cutting out was due to the air intake pipe between the air flow meter and throttle body.
