Hi all.

How much coolant should be drained from the system before changing the thermostat.
Apart from the hose to the swirl pot the stat seems to be about the highest point.

Currently running to cool only making about 60 degrees.
Going to fit new 82 degree Stat guess its stuck open.

Any tips or pointers appreciated.

Thanks Neil

Just undo the housing and pull it off... what comes out then needs replacing when you re-fit... I'd not bother draining it down?.....
They have quite thick gaskets on the housing so get a new one before you start.. any LR dealer will have them... and apply a bit of blue hylamar...
If your new stat has a hole with a ball crimped in it (to let air out when closed and allow water to fill).. put this towards the top...
Also.. remove the screw from the manifold pipe when re-filling to ensure this is full with no air traps...
Job done in 30 mins??;)

Thanks for reply. Have already got stat and gasket, will get cracking with it.
No hidden problems then.

Did mine today took about ten min. No need to drain as stated just top up after you've run it up.

The best thermostats these days can only fail open. Remember that a thermostat sets the lower limit the engine coolant will run at, it won't stop an system from overheating.

Whaen was the last time you flushed your system. I do mine every two years. You will already have removed the thermostat so its easy. Run a hose through the detached upper rad hose and, if you can, open the block water cocks, either by opening the valves if they have them or threading out the cock completely. Run clean water until the debris stops and the water runs clear. 15-20 minutes.
