Treated myself to a trip to work in the Chimaera today and the idol was horrific!!!

It ticked over at 2.5k for over 30 miles!

The exhaust is sleeved so you can imagine my embarrassment at the lights!

Usually she idols high for a bit and then returns to just under 1k.

Ran her at the weekend no problems.

So why after a few days in the garage is she now playing up?

  • Before we go any further; you could eat your dinner off the stepper it's that clean!**
Now I am in no way “mechanically” minded so any suggestions need to be fully understood by say a 10 year old!

The only thing I have done different is start her up a few time mid-week to make sure she is turning over ok (and to test the alarm).

I've got 10 hrs before I finish work and have to go back out there and start her up..

If you are in the Crawley area feel free to come and tinker?

Other than that; any suggestions?

Would removing the Stepper help (when it's warm)?

Could this be an air leak?

  • Am I going to damage anything by driving it about with such high revs?** (other than my MPG)
Thanks in advance and have a great, problem free, TVR weekend.

As a temporary fix get the car warm and when it's at 900rpm idle disconnect the stepper wire, and it should stay at 900rpm on idle after

But it will be difficult to start cold if you do this

If its stil doing it after, you probaly have a split hose or air leak

Thanks Alex..

My issue is that as soon as i start it the revs tick over high?

I'd say air leak too but it's done this before and once warmed up a bit settles down..

If its going right up from the go, I'd look for a air leak

Failing that, pop the hose off from the plenum and make sure the throttle is closing

Just went out for a lunch-time tinker and all is well???

Went under the bonnet and made sure stepper was tight and no visible hose damage that could result in loss of air..

Started her and she sat there with a perfect idol?

I give in...

You watch. 5:30pm when I need to leave and it wont start!

No! I take that back! Really need to get home tonight!

I had similar problem once and it was a sticking throttle linkage, applied oil to linkages in foot well and cured the problem, I also discovered a slight water leak into the footwell which was the cause of the ceasing linkage in first place.

I once met Billy Idol in Santa Barbara, nice bloke, he let me sit on his lovely custom Harley.

My Chimaera idles perfectly & I can honestly say I have never cleaned the stepper motor.

The answer is never worship false idols.

Or do I mean, the devil makes work for idle hands?

+1 -meeting Billy

13 years never touched. Idles fine 99.9% of the time.
No false idles here.

2500 rpm is about what you get with no stepper control at all, ie its stuck wide open with full airflow. Easy test if it does it again, just clamp off the rubber pipe that feeds air to the stepper with a big pair of pliers or a g clamp and see what the idle does. If it drops to 5-600 rpm the stepper is jammed open or has lost its feed from the ECU, if it stays high its an air leak some where else.

Went out after work on Friday and started 1st time and had perfect IDLE not IDOL (thanks for all above jokes)..

Billy Idol.. Seriously..? smile

Will have it looked at come MOT/Service and hopefully get to the bottom of it?

Run from Crawley to Reaing was perfect.

Big up to the Tamora owner who enjoyed with me, the "car park" like traffic we encountered on the M25.

Until the next problem...

think it might be worth getting a spare stepper motor. mine did it again earlier, as I pulled out into the middle of a small town at lunchtime, school kids everywhere, it then started going up and down up and down then konked out, wouldnt start back up again and I could hear the stepper chattering away, eventualy got it started after getting cheers from the school kids, so got a different kind of cheer with the rears lighting up wink

Deffo worth hooking up with a fellow owner and perhaps swapping the steppers over?

Would be a sure fire way to rule it out?

I'm sure if you put up a fresh post someone will come to your rescue?

PM me if you are Brighton way smile

Good luck!
