Starts fine from cold, runs very nicely, occassional wild idle at rest.
Problem is trying to restart when warm following a short break of say 5 - 10 mins.
Fuel pump primes, engine turns over fine, just floods and wont fire up. Smell of petrol. AA started by cranking the engine with full throttle for 20 - 30 seconds which I wasnt happy about as I could imagine the starter motor melting and the battery dying! Ran like a bag of nails after that for about 5 minutes then seemed to clear and was fine until i tried to restart (at home in my garage luckily!)
Just wondered if any of you kind gents had any ideas?

AA used standard method of clearing a flooded engine (IMHO).
Particularly when engine has run, best method to clear excess fuel is to floor throttle and crank....yes..maybe for as long as 30 seconds. Should fire then and will run lumpy until excess fuel is cleared.
I believe the RV8 ecu recognises floored throttle and either reduces fuel or shuts it off.....all IMHO.

+1 I properly flooded my Chim some years ago and over 60 seconds of cranking at full throttle was needed to clear it.nawarne said:

I stalled leaving for work this morning. Our front 'drive' is just part of the front garden that is paved over and is slightly longer than the Chim. It also slopes down from the kerb to the garage. When leaving I need to find a balance between not launching out into the road and rolling back into the garage. Every morning starts with a hill start!I ended up stalled half on the pavement and half in the road. I simply started the engine on full throttle and it caught fine. In the olden days I would have tried starting in normally and usually would end up with a flooded engine.

IMHO, I don't! I do think the ecu has an over xealous auto-choke which results in a very rich mixture when starting a cold engine.Nick
The original Range Rover initial cold start fueling is somewhat rich, and I dont think TVR have changed that part of the map. It should not be an issue when warm however, and the ECU should tightly control the mixture so it never floods. Over fueling when warm could be the AFM starting to fail, as they can give an over high voltage for the given airflow, so the ECU puts in excess fuel to match the wrong airflow reading.
Thanks again for the replies.
The car starts from cold fine, runs really well, normal pressure temp etc.
Problem only occurs when I try to restart when warm. Turn the key, pump primes, turns over and just wont fire. Smells of fuel
From the replies it sounds like AFM or air leak. i am hoping to book in to Dan Taylor for him to have a look.
New AFM looks about £300!

You should not have to pay that much for one, they are the same as any 3.9 Range Rover / Landrover one, so you should be able to a Lucas recon' one for less or I think a new one was around £190. The basic body of the AFM is the same on any Lucas 5AM, but the end castings do vary a bit, but you can swap them over if the new one is wrong. A working second hand one is around £25-40, dont pay "TVR" prices,it is nothing special! Dont buy the cheap Chinese ones off Ebay, make sure its a badged Lucas unit.

Good luck James. Let us know how you get on.

Thanks Eddie, will do.Cheers..............eddie
Swapped my AFM with a mate of mines last weekend and it seemed to cure the problem. Ran fine with a proper idle as well so fingers crossed
New AFM from Clevor Trevor (reasonably priced too!)arrived yesterday and so all I need to do now is find time to fit, hopefully this weekend. As much as I enjoy driving the Audi.......!
Ok new AFM fitted
Starts fine from cold
Starts fine from hot
BUT now its hunting when driving below 2000 rpm and when I stop.
Also when I start from hot or cold the idle shoots up to 2,500 rpm for about 10 secs before dropping back to a pretty steady 900 - 1000.
Just wondered if the ECU needs resetting and if so is it just a case of unplugging, leaving for 30 secs and replugging?
Apologies for the numpty questions!
Regards
James
