Toyo Proxes T1R's
Discussion
I have been looking at lots of posts over the last week and tyres seem to be a bit of a minefield. Especially as a lot of companies dont do them in the correct sixes.
At a minimum I need to two new front tyres and i think this should be 205/55/15 but will check whats already on the car.
What are people thoughts on the T1R's. Are these a good option?
This is what i have but as mine are so old (6 yrs) and out of shape I have no idea what they should be like. Need to get this sorted asap I dont like having very old tyres.

T1R's all round on mine and they are a great all round tyre (IMHO)
Used them around Goodwood with plenty of grip. No problems in the wet either!
I'm very happy with mine. Speed rating on the front is lower than the recommeded so best to make a quick call to your insurance company to be on the safe side.

Ditto, as I have stayed with the original wheels also.I can't comment on many other tyre combinations, though quite a few posters suggest the TOYO R888 (?)
But AFAICT they are a bit more expensive, and not available in the 'stock' sizes.
Someone please enlighten us if someone they know differently.
The speed rating of the T1Rs is a touch annoying. The original Bridgestone SO2s were all ZR rated.
Again; AFAICT they seem to be as good as maybe better than the originals. My memory does dim a little since the SO2 haven't been available for quite some time now.

Just make sure you change all four as a grippy front end mixed with rock hard older tyres can create handling that becomes a bit of a handful.

HI,
I have the original wheels too: 15" ateh teh front and 16" at the rear and have Toyo Proxes both on the front and rear and I am pretty happy with them...
I have done and hour on an airfield and TVR at Goodwood and confirm that the grip is pretty good... saying so I have not experienced many tyre combinations....
I know than the Toyo Proxes are recomended by many and what is sure is that they are much better in the went that the rear tyres I have before (i do not remember the brand so maybe my comment is not that useful)...
But basically Toyo Proxes offer fron and rear tyres (15 & 16") quite a few people on this site recomend them, I have them on and pretty happy with them...

Choices on original sized rims are limited, however, Toyos are a good choice if not better than Bridgstones.
Your choice really are budgets (avoid), Dunlop SP9000 a hard compound unsuitable for light cars (and v expensive) and Toyo T1R.
I have used Toyo previously on a RWD sports car before and they were very good, I have just fitted T1R's at the front and after 500 miles impressions are good. Do consider replacing all 4 as my rear Brdigstonesare not mixing well with fronts (hard rubber & grippy fronts = plenty oversteer on wet islands) so i will be visiting Camskill again soon.
Front Toyos are V rated = up to 150 mph - just check your insurers are okay
Finally the T1S are due to be replaced - so get a full set now at a good price.

I am on my second set of T1Rs with standard 15" on the front and 16". Changed to these from Bridgestone S02s then SO3s. I found that the Bridgestones were much better than the T1Rs in the dry (and I mean bone dry). I chickened out before the Bridgestones gave up cornering in the dry, whereas the T1Rs give some squeal and a 4 wheel gentle drift if you push it but you can still corner very hard with a balanced throttle.
Where the T1RS really come in, is the wet. The Bridgestones were frightening in the wet and the car literally floated on standing water on the motorway - very scary. The T1Rs are massively better and as mine is a daily driver, I find them a much better all round tyre for the car. I can put down a good percentage of full throttle pulling away smartly from junctions with no wheel spin on wet roads and the tail stays where it should.
If you plan on driving in the wet, using the car as a car, go for the Toyos. If its a Sunday car / track day car / dry weather only car, you can probably get better than a Toyo.

Ahh yes. It comes back now.The SO2/SO3 were very much;
faster,
faster,
faster, woops!
gone!
Better grip, but little forgiveness once you were close to that 'point', the next 1/2 mph was way too much.
Stuck like glue, until they didn't.
Thank you for that experience taylormj4.
You have just caused years of memories to re-surface that will probably require several sessions of counselling to re-bury.

To make it worse, sometime after getting the T1R's, I felt I was becoming a better driver.
Now I know it was all down to the tyres

Your wall height is 3mm smaller so no problem except catching ..but should be ok.

If you can get them in the right sizes go for the Toyo R1-R's. Much better tyre than the T1R's. I ran T1-R's for a few years, but it was only when i put 888's on the car that i realised just how much wobble and lack of grip the car had! But 888's not everyone's cuppa!
The R1-R's are a big favourite of the Lotus crowd.
Edit to add: See if Yokohama do AD08's in the right size. Very well priced, superb all round performance and wear well. Much better than T1-r's for similar money.
