Just about to start rebuilding my stage 3 4.6

Which timing chain set would you guys recommend?

Seems to be a few types but the names that crop up are the JP Performance, the Cloyes Street and the Vernier style one.

Will I be able to get the cam bang on with a non-vernier?

I used the better Cloyes one.

After a couple of hours setting the cam, (a Piper one off) with a dial gauge and protracter, it was bang on the spots on the timing gears!

Vernier every time IMHO.

I prefer the Piper one to the Kent one - it looks better with all the holes in wink

How come? I thought the cam retaining plate was needed on the 4.6? Or is it just a case of 'not with that particular chain set?"

My 4.6 didn't have a retaining plate but is held back by the dizzy although they have the facility for the retaining plate.

4.6 uses a different retainer than the 3.9/500 ie horseshoe shape rather than a circle. They do have different bolt hole patterns IIRC, so maybe that interferes with those particular vernier bolts. If I had more time I'd have a look to see if converting to countersunk bolts would overcome the issue?

I think you may be getting a little confused as to a 4.6 range rover set up as to what a tvr uses, yes the 4.6 has to have like dave said a horseshoe plate, this is basically because it runs a cam sensor and any float in the cam would just hit the sensor and cause problems, the 4.6 rr cam also runs a completely different nose to the cam and timing sprockets, your engine will be fitted with the interim front cover and older style camshaft nose, the piper vernier is amost flat on the back so it will hit the retaining plate (dave its not the bolts its the plate itself) the kent one is scolloped out to miss the plate, jp will go straight on but catches the front cover on some so may need dressing down, the cloyes will go straight on but doesnt give much in the way of adjustment.

I was hoping to use the cover that came with the engine (it was a 4.6 from a RR HSE). No need for dizzy hole (MS) Is that gonna be different from what is needed?

You need to use the sump that came with the engine then, as well as making up new pulley arrangements for the belt as that cover also moves the waterpump pulley back a tad... With that cover you can only use the original timing set from LR - there is no room for any of the others, and the cam nose is also quite different BTW.

ETA: forgot to type "Much easier to just stick a bung in the dizzy hole!"

Fair one Dave - looks like I'll be using the one off my 3.9 then....Which is a total pain in the c0ck as it is attached to my car at the mo and would like it to remain so until the new engine is ready to go in! I suppose they are difficult to find these intermediate ones?
