Frequently pop rivets as well, you just have to cut the silicone & drill out the pop rivets. Early cars have a flap (manual recirc) which gives you some access in case it is just the motor jammed with twigs..
Well worth installing cooker hood air filter stuff in the inner wing to ensure longevity of the motor IMHO (as well as keeping grit out of your eyes

)I've had mine out - battery, carpet, heater pipes, the birds nest wiring etc all in the way, loads of silicone and rivets to be removed to allow the fan base to be freed.
Mine had seized up due to the side repeater leaking water onto the motor. I freed it up with WD40 and it's been fine ever since.

Also worth adding that a I had to use a reasonable amount of violence to remove mine. It also resultedin skinned knuckles.
As already said drill rivets cut silicon remove heater pipes. Jam hand above fibre glass fan panel and prise away pulling at top of fibre glass panel firmly.
Mark 2 Vauxhall Astra if I remember correctly. No longer available from Vauxhall and the usual TVR suppliers had no stock. Bought a new one from a vauxhall part supplier on interweb.
