20% of mobil oils at halfrauds/ 10w 60 anyone tried it?
Discussion
Hi guys just a heads up for 20% off mobil one at halfords.
Anyone tried this http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/...
I normally use mobill 1 motorsport 15w 50 but would this be any better?
Am i right to say this should be a bit thicker being 60 rated, or am i totally wrong

When hot, a 10W/60 will be slightly thicker than a 15W/50. But when cold, the 10w/60 will be slightly thinner than the 15W/50. The first number gives the cold viscosity; the second number is the hot viscosity: the higher the number, the thicker.
In terms of viscosity, the 10W/60 looks like the better all-rounder. But you also need to consider the zinc (ZDDP) content, which is hard (or impossible) to find out. You need an oil with a high ZDDP content.
Personally, I use Fuchs "Titan Race Pro S" in 10W/50, partly because it's been mentioned on the oil thread that it's high in ZDDP.

Info from mobil website. Looks promising.

Also worth a read. Scroll down to the bit about racing oils especially 0w 50 racing oil. It has a very high zinc content [twice as much as most commercially avaiable]and is more suited to flat tappet engines.

Then they say its not suitable for road going cars, but the reasons given concentrate on the racing oils contents do not meet the current criteria for selling oil to the general motoring public.

"You say that Mobil 1 Racing oils are not for street use. Why is that? Does that mean I can't use these oils if my race car is also my daily driver?
Automotive street use oils that meet the latest industry standards are required to have a lower level of Zinc and Phosphorus anti-wear chemistries than oils formulated years ago. The latest automotive street use engine oils are designed to be compatible with emission control equipment. Mobil 1 Racing oils are formulated with anti-wear (Zinc/Phosphorus) chemistries at twice the level of automotive street oils to provide enhanced protection of highly loaded valve train systems found in some race engines. Based on the high level of anti-wear chemistries, Mobil 1 Racing oils are not recommended for street use."
All very interesting?

Just as an aside;
When I collected my car, TVR warranty had just expired, 6000 mile service just done, dealer warranty in place, I was specifically 'warned' that just like TVR's warranty, I must never use anything other than Mobile 1 5W/50, or the warranty would be voided.
Of course, if you read the manual, all lubricants were specified as Mobil, and that like so many other car manufacturers indicates that there was probably some sort of 'deal' between TVR and Mobil.
(I am prepared to be enlightened if someone knows better)
I've not seen 5W/50 on the shelf for some time now, but have used 0W/50 in it's place since.
I would certainly be interested in hearing from those more expert if there is a sound reason for changing...

Makes me laugh all this about Mobil one being the ultimate oil for TVR's, when a cam might only last 60 k miles. Anyway the bit about needing zinc in "flat tappet" engines may not be so true on the RV8 as the cam followers have a slight curve on them so they rotate to even out the wear. The zinc is only there as a fall back when the oil film shears, as it prevents micro welds from occurring when you get metal to metal contact. You really should not get this in the first place with a decent oil. Its been phased out of oil as it contaminates the catalysts on road cars, over time causing them to fail. As for the viscosity, you only want to run a range that suits the temperature range the engine is likely to be used in most of the time. i.e. if you do a lot of cold starts and short journeys, the thin bit of the oil range is the important bit, ie the 5 or 10 bit of the grade. At the other end the thick bit of the oil range is important for high temperature running, so if you use the car mostly in the summer on decent runs, then a thicker grade oil will help keep the oil pressure up under load. If you run a really heavy grade (like a 60) it puts the load up on the oil pump when cold, so it wears the drive gears and saps engine power. So for summer use a 15-50 grade should be fine, or winter use a 10-40 range would be better. Dont make the mistake of thinking a racing oil has got to be good on a road engine, as these oils are designed to be changed after very short intervals, and dont contain the levels detergents used to keep road engines clean.

I used to use 10/60 and to date it still my favourite oil,
I got vr1 in now 20/50 and IMO it run hotter, noisier and 10 psi less pressure than the 10/60 I used to use
Thumbs up from me,
Strange this I got vr1 in now 20/50 and IMO it run hotter, noisier and 10 psi less pressure than the 10/60 I used to use
Thumbs up from me,
I use VR1 and never had a problem with pressure or heat I don't worry about the 20 part as I am a summer user only
+ it as the necessary quantities of ZDDP the fact its not synthetic don't bother me either as it's not in the motor for more than 3K
and I can get the stuff for a very good price, my brother is a convert and as noticed an improvement in hot oil pressure too.Ive always used Castrol edge 10w 60 sport and nothing else, just serviced Chim to find its no longer available.
was going to use Mobil 15w 50, thats no longer available.
So pleased to see Halfords sell Mobil 1 10w 60 in 5 litres and is on special offer.
Only done about 20 miles before laying up for winter but I think 10 60 is good for the rv8.

I`ve been afetr Some very good oil with perfect viscosity, Pentrite Semi Synthetic HPR 15W/60 ,heard good reports but not managed to get hold of any.Im sticking with valvoline 20w50 VR1 mineral oil until i get my hands on some Penrite..
Moss Europe sell Penrite HPR15, last time I bought some it was a not unreasonable £37 for 5L.I've also been using Castrol edge 10w60 sport and very happy with it. just googled it and appently its been replaced

This is better than the rubbisih you keep talking about 15w60, V8D told me this is the best stuff.
• Ideal for large capacity V8 engines in all forms of motorsport.
