I don't think so but they are!

I purchased the car 20 months from a local 'TVR specialist' having had new outriggers fitted as part of the pre sales work. Bearing in mind that it's a 3rd car that has almost never seen rain, covered around 6k since purchase and kept in a (non heated) garage since purchase my heart sank when I saw this.

This pic is taken at the front wheel arch where it's at its nastiest but it's on the brink of becoming a similar story all over the new outriggers! Though I find it hard to believe it looks as though the bare metal outriggers were simply finished in Waxoyl, which can't be normal way of doing this can it?

The critical thing now being how best to tackle it, which is when I turn to you guys for advice! The rust is currently superficial so I'm not worried about the structural integrity of the outriggers etc, but does anyone have any advice how best to stop the current grot?

Thanks (and sorry for the dull post)

Strip all the waxoyl off and paint in POR15 but to be honest the only way to do it properly is to lift the body. The problem with welding in new outriggers is how do you powdercoat them?

As above, only way to get at them properly is a body lift (really not that difficult).

Thorough clean up and paint with whatever takes your fancy, Por 15, Rustoleum, Hammerite etc. in fact most of the big paint manufacturers offer an anti-rust paint, Ronseal, International and so on.

Are we saying that a "TVR Specialist" fitted new outriggers and just waxoiled them!! surely not. I would be taking it back to them and ask them for there comment. It seems crazy that someone would do this after going to the trouble of removing and fitting new outriggers!!.

there must be some sort of warranty on the work done by the "specialist".

Thanks for your comments guys. After a long chat with Matt at Sebring it's going to him in the new year to be sorted. As for a warranty with the supplying dealer; as I say the outriggers were fitted pre sale and didn't come with any specific warranty. I did speak to them yesterday but they couldn't give a sh*t so I wont be wasting any more time with them.

Out of interest what were you expecting them to do about it? These cars all have the same problem with the outriggers and they need inspection / protection on a regular basis - if you had waited over a year and a half and then called me up to complain I think I would probably be fairly blunt about in on the phone too.

its a shame what has happened and unfortunately you have left it too long to have any rights against the seller . but being a specialist they should have done a proper job on outriggers before sale as to deteriorate in such a short space of time and little mileage is very poor work manship on the outriggers. but this is only my opinion and i am sure others would be shocked too.

I'm assuming the local specialist is literally just down the road from you? I gave up using them many years ago due to poor quality of work and their not give a toss attitude.
Sebring get all my business now despite the 80 mile round trip.

Still Piss poor that a "TVR Specialist" who is well aware that outriggers are are a problem area on TVRs would fit new outriggers and not treat them with protective paint or powdercoating, is it too much to expect a "TVR Specialist" to do a proper job first time.

I expected them to show an interest, discuss how best to repair it, that's all.

Thats the bit that baffled me about your post as most specialists would see this as an opportunity to sell you a chassis clean and refurb (discounted perhaps as it came from them)

Might this place have a fleet of courtesy cars all of a swedish nature?

I don't disagree but different people would suggest different things as the "proper job" - I have had it suggested to me that I simply apply a liberal mix of diesel and waxoyl on mine and top it up every 6-12 months (I chose a different option)

^^ This is my view.

They (as would anyone with an ounce of common sense) should know that simply Waxoyling bare mild steel outriggers is not a long term solution. Speaking to others, new outriggers are powder coated / painted at the welds before being Waxoyled which at least gives them a fighting chance.

Without wishing to be picky is it really just a coating of waxoyl on them? The flaking at the outer end looks more to me like its had tetrosyl / gravelguead or similar on it - certainly a layer of "hard coating". Waxoyl remains soft for years after application and doesn't crack..

You could be right mate, I'm simply assuming it's the remains of the Waxoyl, whatever it is the outcome is same.

+1

Can't imagine anyone being daft enough to rely on waxoyl alone to protect them but if they did they really don't give a shid about the work they do.

As Mike says it could be the remains of the waxoyl. Its hard to tell sometimes from a picture. Get a 6 inch rule and have a scrape around the tubing surface and see what chips off, does it go down to bare metal, and post the piccy up.

They have been changed, I've been underneath the car whilst on a ramp and seen / shown the cut and weld points, all looked very well back then, the current rust looks superficial.
The disappointing thing now is that when seen in the flesh the original chassis is in far better shape than the new outriggers, such is the poor quality of the finish to the outriggers you can sort of see where old stops and new starts.
Its just occurred to me that the Waxoyl on the wishbones / original chassis etc is all still fine and all in good condition, the whole lot was freshly Waxoyled when I bought the car, so I was wondering why have just the outriggers alone suffered so badly after such light and essentially fair weather use? it has to be down to the original installation.
