After two years of waiting I have finally picked up my first TVR Chimaera today.

I purchased it from a garage - non TVR specialist. It has been in for a service but still has issues......

The battery light is constantly flickering even though the 100 amp fuse has been bypassed and a new alternator has been put on (supplied by TVR specialist). A meter has been put across the output of the the new alterantor and it only reads 10v at idle and 13-15 when revved.

It also has quite a few flat spots whilst driving and feels like it may die every so often.

There is also no oil pressure registering on the guage at idol and up to 15 max when revved. - is this related to the voltage problems?

It will not restart once you haved turned it off after its been running for a while and you have to wait it seems until it has cooled down before restarting OK!?!
.......Doesn't seem like the service guy knew what he was doing.......!
Can anyone help with some fault diagnosis

After 2 years of waiting for this day i never thought i would have so much grief from such a beuatiful thing!

You didn't buy it from a garage on South Coast Road did you?

Cutlerp,

Thay is very bad luck, must be gutting having waited so long.
I would seriously take it back to the garage and demand it be fixed or your money back, under the sales of goods act (It should have been sold to you fit for the Purpose it was bought for)
There are many great well looked after Chims around at the moment, I do hope this is sorted as quickly as possible for you.

Yes take it back a sappaty sap. If it was brought from a non TVR garage then it was either a PX (someone wanted shot of it) or a poss auction car (someone wanted shot of it fast)

The hot start is poss starter motor, so nothing mega but the car should have been in reasonable condition when you brought it, coz like all TVR's they start to go wrong the day after the warranty runs out.

Hi,

I was in a similar position us you last year. I had always wanted a TVR but also wanted other toys at the time more. After a bit of looking around i picked up a 94 Chianti 4.0L looked luverly when polished. Unfortuneatly it was the most unreliable car i had ever owned and had a lot of money spent on it to get it all sorted, by which time i had lost all faith in it and sold it.

From my experiences get everything sorted asap and from a good garage that knows about Chims (if you live near the Midlands have a look at my other posts for recommendations) the worst mistake i made was not getting everything sorted in one go. I left it for a couple of months by which time i had been let down so many times it wasn't worth it to me.

I should be on the ferry by now out of dover on the way to Magny Cours......Doh!

I didn't think it was worth taking it back to the dealership so ive taking to the pro's.

A sound like it may sort it’s self out once the electrical problem is fixed. At least that's probably the first thing to get off the list and rule out.

I don't know how tolerant the ECU is to supply voltage but I’d imagine that if it’s seeing 10v then it’s potentially going to cause it problems along with all the other electrics. Has the battery been tested ?

Good luck and don’t get to down hearted, I’m sure that before too long you’ll be out on the road with the roof down enjoying the sun

Had a similar problem with mine when the alternator died. Repalaced it and fitted a new battery, ran fine till the battery lost its charge. Ignition light stayed off but no charge, then light went on and off, then oil press dropped, the car lost power above 2500rpm. Drove home very slow. Replaced alternator again still the same. Traced it to a black wire on the charging circuit going down to earth, cut this wire and all ok. Electrics can cause weird things!!

I did a similar thing, bought my Chim from a VW dealer after it had been sat on the forcourt for a couple of months with the asking price steadily reducing. Test drove it once and wahay! please have some money Mr dealer.... Had a few niggles straight away (starter motor hot start probs), got dealer to fit new starter motor under warrantee but still probs. Knew virtually nothing about TVRs and hadn't found PH yet.

Anyway, took it to the dealer who knows what they are doing and a couple of hundred quid later it was much better, all nigles sorted. After servicing it was even better than that and (touch formica) it's running fine 20K miles later, dealer looking after it if anything needs doing, servicing etc.

Morale of the story
1) Don't buy the first one you drive like I did
2) When buying from a non TVR specialist, insist that a TVR Specialist or dealer checks it over and/or services it included in purchase price.

I'm Back!!!!

Thanks for all the help on this guys its been a real headache for me and this forum has been a HUGE help thank you to you all.

Austec racing in Crawley- near Gatwick sorted me right out the guy who runs the place, Mike was an absolute god send....extreamly helpful and freindly I highly recomend them if you are thinking of getting you car serviced/fixed or thinking of having it rolling roaded.

I basically flatbeded yhe car over to them on Thrursday evening/fri morning and left the keys with a note explaining my plight.

8am on friday the chaps allready had the car in the workshop and it was fixed by lunchtime...stunning!

it had a wiring fault which caused the new alternatir to die, so they sorted it put an alternator on it and new battery and i was off.

the drive to Magny cours later that day was somewhat of a learning curve but great fun the car rocks my world...a real head turner.

thank god for mike at austec.

cheers

Just as a word of caution, it sounded like a duff alternator, an a normal car voltage should be 12.7 volts at rest and 13.7-14.5 running.

How is the oil pressure now? Was it the voltage wrecking the reading?

Hot start problems could be the starter on the way out?
