has anyone used this sort of charger to keep there battery topped up, im thinking it might help as my battery was to flat to start the car the other day after a few weeks of no use. my car is kept in a carport so is out of the weather but not in direct sunlight, but its also not in the dark. i use optimate chargers in the garage on the motorbikes but dont have a easy power supply to my carport.

whats ur guys views on this sort of thing.

Solar panel chargers do work,

My car is much much better at holding its charge now I had a battery cut off switch installed

If you can, fit both and you know it will never go flat!

My battery was absolutely knackered. I have had a new one but also bought a solar charger to keep it conditioned better.

I went with a more expensive one figuring that for the sake of + £30 quid I would rather have one that would keep my battery longer.

It has sat for about 10 days so far but has started each time started as if the battery was full (fast spinning noise as opposed to labored)

More or less on topic and not 'aimed' at anyone in particular;

While I would never dispute the advantages of using a battery conditioner, especially if a car sits for extended periods; I have never needed/used one.
Thirteen years, same car, 97k+ miles, on third battery since new (changed eight months ago).

I had an issue with a door switch not working once, causing discharge eventually leading to requiring a new battery, but that was easily diagnosed and fixed (by someone more knowledgeable than myself).

My point (and personal opinion) being; if your battery is going flat within a week or two, you have either have a fault somewhere, or something like the alarm or stereo is drawing a lot more power than it probably should.
(that is just my very amateur opinion on causes, so no flames please)

This really is not one of those 'TVRs do that' sort of things. I have seen it so many times in these forums, (car not starting after a week or two sitting), that I feel compelled to say it again.
You really don't have to live with it, it can be cured. smile

if I had used a battery conditioner, I might still be on my second battery

hi thanks for the replys, i think ill get one today and give it a go. im not sure there is a problem making my battery go flat, just lack of use, work and bad weather means its been about 5-6 weeks since the car has been used, if i leave it for a couple of weeks it starts perfect,

i like the switch idea tho where would could the switch be located to so its can be got to when the car is locked.

Good to hear it isn't a chronic issue for you.

There was a thread very recently on the subject of switches.
Many suggestions and proven solutions posted.
Worth searching for, but I can't remember if it was in 'Chimaera' or 'General TVR Stuff & Gossip'

The solar panel charger is on my Boxster as the TVR gets the garage with electric, that has a CTEC trickle charger.

A battery conditioner will cycle the battery voltage between a full charge and a standby charge in order to stop the lead plates from sulphating up, or gassing excessively. This is a very precise controlled voltage cycle to get the best life from the battery, and most battery conditioners have a CPU / program to do this. A solar panel will simply trickle charge the battery so it wont be flat and no more.

I tried a solar charger on my Mk1 Tuscan and decided it didnt help but I was leaving it in airport car parks for three weeks at a time.
I then had a battery brain fitted which worked fine.
