What is the best way to set up the chim exhaust system to get the right tones of burble and deepness from the v8 without going OTT?
i.e. to deepen the tone a few db's from standard is it best to either:
1.) remove the pre cats
2.) insert the sleeve tubes
or should you do both 1 & 2.
Don't want to go the full decat / cherry bomb or Y piece route. Thinks this could be too loud for me

This is mine with options 1 and 2, Some say tractor like but personally I love it

I've had pre-cats removed and previous owner had the silencers opened up and all the rockwool removed, but their not sleeved. Was a country mile over the track day noise limit at Snetterton before christmas (107 DB's IIRC). The rumble at tickover is everything a V8 should be, and at high revs it's just 'king awesome. MS2 is also providing massive grin inducing pops and bangs on the over run. Go for pre-cats out AND sleeved (or silencers emptied) You know it makes sense

Its a tad OTT to stick an AJP8 in though just to get the Chim to sound good http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=24aCGWUEPSQ

i was following that cerb on a tunnel run, i thought my exhaust was loud but it was completely drowned out by the cerb, so i stumped up for the decatted y piece and ear muffs for the neighbours lol
this is my chim 500
straight through exhaust, pre cats and main cats in place

this second one is straight through exhaust ( no silencing) and clives fantastic de catted y-piece

I tried lots of variants with mine.
Pre cats out, that was no brainer.
Tried the straight through pipes and they were a bit too much for me, so I went for a 50/50 split of straight through and perforated pipe, this was nice and deep but no burble.
De cat Y piece was next but I thought it made the car loud not the exhaust. You couldnt hold a conversation next to the engine when it was on idle without almost shouting.
Eventually I put the main cat back in and fitted cherry bombs in the back box. That was my favorite and will be what I go for when I get another TVR.
The noise was behind the car not in the car, if you know what I mean, loved it and would recommend it.

Does removing the pre-cats alone have any discernable effect with regard to sound?
Any problems with MOT emissions or to the main cat?
I think the Pre cats work from cold, so make sure the engine is warm when taking it forthe mot .Any problems with MOT emissions or to the main cat?
The engine will rev more freely and it will sound very nice ..not to loud, just clean and crisp ..

Advice from local tvr guys is to go for option 2 i.e open the box and remove the baffles and insert tubes straight through. cost around £150 inc vat.
Although our sports exhaust specialist says take the box out completely and have pipes going straight through. cost £120 inc vat with box to take away which can be refitted, for £80 if need be. Although I guess this will be on the plus side of loud.
Lestershaw's first video of his 500 sounds cool enough and for £120 is good value too.

I would keep the box just in case you dont like the straight through pipes, at least you will be able to go back to standard or other options more easily.Although our sports exhaust specialist says take the box out completely and have pipes going straight through. cost £120 inc vat with box to take away which can be refitted, for £80 if need be. Apparantly it's not good to by pass the silencer box (with straight through pipes) as this causes some in balance on valve pressure? and can result in a drop in bhp.
So the sleeved option is the one that I'll go for, ive been informed that this is not too difficult to do and requires one pipe(sleeve)welded into each side of the box, connecting the pipes? does anyone have any photo's/instructions/dimemsions of the pipe, as I may have a go at this myself. Thanks

I personally think a lot of the Rover V8 cars go a bit OTT on the low-rev rumble and lose out on the tone further up the rev range. It makes them sound a bit monotone.
Also bear in mind (in case this is a concern) that you're going to have a real issue with track day noise limits if you start making it louder.
FWIW I believe a lot of people remove the pre-cats, but leave the rest standard. It's said to improve the flow and the noise without going over the top.

Photo of my exhaust box cut open here: http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/gassing/topic.asp?h=0...
Only need to take off 1 side of the box, take out wadding, remove perf pipe, weld in solid pipe, replace wadding and weld up.
Removing the exhaust is easy, although helped that my friend has a pit in his garage!
Regarding noise, Mine went from 95Db as standard exhaust to 101Db after straight through pipes put in. (This is just a rough guide, just measured it on an iphone app!)
