My car starts OK, but idles erratically, 400-1200rpm. At around 400 rpm it nearly stalls. While driving along, the power delivery surges, what power there is, and the engine revs stagnate at ~ 3500- 4000 rpm, despite full throttle. The fault started intermittently at first, 2 months ago, but now seems to be full time.

The fuel pump and filter are ancient so ive ordered replacements regardless. The plugs, coil, leads are all relatively new. However, reading Steve heaths book, he suggests that most engine running problems are sensor faults. Am I barking up the wrong tree with the fuel pump/filter?
btw, the pump primes ok when the ignition is first turned.

Any thoughts/ suggestions appreciated!

First. Give the stepper motor a clean.
Then check coil, ignition amp, plugs and plug leads. Check for nice blue spark.
Check fuel pump and filter has no blockage. Clean electrical contacts when you do this. Cheers.

thanks I'll run a few checks on the spark as the wiring looks a reall mess around the ignition module/ coil area.

Dont forget the ECU has its own in built fault detection. Worth plugging in a fault code reader as a starting place.

Most garages where I live (HK) wouldnt touch a TVR with a mile long chop stick. There are one or two specialist places
that deal in unusual car types, but as yet Ive not met anyone whos suggested running a check on the ECU. Maybe its different to plugging in a Nissan or Toyota.

Anyway, I tend to try sort out the problem myself before a trip to the garage.I was quoted over £2000 to change the valley/ rocker/ timing cover gasket. Its can take weeks to do the work, hence "classic" car ownership is fround upon here!

Its just a Range Rover engine at the end of the day, so the the diagnostic tools and engine mechanics are the basically same. It would well be worth your while getting a fault code reader (about £50 or the Steve heath ECU mate- about £130) so you wont get hoodwinked by someone who says you need a new engine, when its a faulty AFM!

Totally stupid quote for those gaskets!!

Heres my bit on the ECU and diagnostics.

Thanks for the info. Presumably a simple code reader is all I need, any suggestions that can be ordered online ?

I would guess that £2000 in the UK would get a reasonable engine overhaul, let alone a few gaskets !
Well there's a 05 Tuscan for sale here for £70,000 so all things relative as they say

This is the best unit to have, its a fault code reader, plus it gives you all the sensor data as well, as the basic fault code reader only gives you a 2 digit code that can be misleading as the ECU is not that smart.
