Funnily enough, throughout the summer of last year and the unseanonably warm autumn that followed I didn't really notice the loss of my Chimaera that much. Now it's cold and damp and frosty, but somehow I miss it more.

Work was slow to resume after the discovery of the broken rockers and the latest news is that the cheap and cheerful steel rockers we ordered were massively out of tolerance. This far out:

Those are allegedly identical rockers from the same set, both supported the same way on a level shaft and pushed against the same level surface at the other end. You don't even need to measure the variability, you can see it!

(I should point out we were pre-warned by the supplier that they'd had issues with these in the past, and the customer service was first rate - it's not a complaint at all - and they have now been withdrawn from stock.)

Anyway, having properly measured the existing Land Rover ones the spread was far less - within 0.030" which we're told is perfectly acceptable - so we've now reverted to plan a: Re-use those that are in good condition and replace the others with genuine Land Rover rockers.

(Coincidentally, there's a shortage of OEM left hand rockers at the moment, so they're three times as expensive as right hand ones. Fortunately the three that were showing signs of wear were all right handers!)

Hopefully the rockers should be here next week, the engine should be back together shortly afterwards and then we can think about dropping it back in the car. But I can't help wishing it was on the road already, every time I see a decent bit of road or watch a nice car go past. Hopefully not long now.

I have a set of steel rockers that I'm fitting and half are numbered 1 and half 2, visually they look the same, are they?

You might want to check. Very carefully. None of ours were inside the recommended tolerance. Apparently the done thing with the steel ones (these days) is to fit adjustable push roads to compensate for the variability. To be fair, I am told they used to be better, it may be the suppliers have changed.

I will be using solid lifters and adjustable push rods.

I just wondered if there are left and right hand rockers.
Visually, I can't tell the difference.
