Hi

I will soon be in the market for a new hood and was wondering if anybody has used a trimmers in Swansea by the name of JR Smith's?

I spoke to him today and he sounded knowledgeable but his price is well below all of the other quotes I have had?

Some of the MX5 forums rate his work so I was thinking of booking a slot....

Any comments?

Cheers

Not heard of him but im on the other side of the country.

It would be worth going down there and have a look at some of his work.

Post something in the South Wales Section of PH. I think they've been mentioned in there in the past.

Hi Wilfandrowlf, I'm in Cardiff and have been looking for someone good. There is a local one that does it for around £400 but they can't even call me back to discuss it. They people that I would trust to do an excellent job are David Geralds, bit of a drive from here and double the price but it would be a quality job - the proper rubber ears at the door pillars and it'll all fit down properly against the rear wings, velcro etc.
I'd be interested to hear what price you got in Swansea and if they do a good job.

I'm pretty close to David Geralds and would be more interested in driving further away to South Wales to have mine done.

Newtown Motors, when they were the S Wales dealer, used these for new hoods IIRC http://www.car-hood.co.uk/ the're in Cwmbran. I used Leisure Trim in Ponthir to put a new hood on my old S1 and Autostich in Balckwood for a new rear screen on the Chim.

That web link is the company I was talking about. I called them twice to ask if they were familiar with TVR full roof replacements and was told someone would call back but never got the call.

Many thanks Storm Grey. I have made up my mind that's where I'll go.
I live in Bristol so it's only 77 miles according to Google.
Even with the fuel and (extortionate) bridge toll! they are miles cheaper than my local outfits.

I will post pics when it's done.

Incidentally I will be posting some pics of my own mods and repairs soon if any one is interested?nerd

I visited the trimmers in question in Swansea last friday and he seemed to know his stuff.
Had several cars lined up for work and 1 finished one for me to see.
All looked good, so one I get a fresh MOT I'll be making a booking.
I managed to get some hood material samples too, one called mohair and one other which had a "blacker" look to it but was a slightly coarser weave.
Not sure which to choose, but can decide on the day.
Will post some pics when done.

Are you the guy who came up to Ollerton Nottinghamshire to buy the car ?

I got a complete new roof including the rear section and both seats re covered in leather for £900

Yep that's me.
I'm busy getting it ready for the MOT so I've done loads of work on the car lately, including:
New cam.
New dash (carbon, not wood).
Clear indicators.
New mats.
New rad (original let go last summer).
Re furbed the wipers and squishes.
Generally getting the thing usable.
Hate to think what I've spent but it's a hobby so keeps me out of the pub!!!

Next on the list Lupo lights, ordered a s/h pair from a breaker today £49.50 delivered, then a new hood.

The list goes on and on but I love tinkering........

Hello Daz

Your roof looks very smart, I see you went for the original style rear window.

I think I may go for a narrower one to avoid the dreaded crease that develops over time near the aluminium struts.
I saw a picture on a thread here of a narrower window and it looked smart.
The trimmer said it wasn't a problem and I could have any size I wanted.
Any body else gone narrow? If so please post up a pic to compare.....idea

I had my roof done then a few weeks later the smaller style rear screen was posted ,just my luck ,i do prefer the smaller window even if its just for practicality.Don`t think £900 is to bad for the seats and roof..
