ignition coil.??

any help be appriciated,chim. starts fine when cold develops misfire then starts popping splutering,then stops and will not restart until cold,then same prob,when restarts,classic coil breaking down,u would think?? any one else had similar prob or know of another possible cause,i gonna get/order new coil tomorrow as the one i got looks ancient,any other possible cause.many thanks.

Hi Mark - this could also be the ignition amp, which is more common than a coil breaking down under heat. If your car is pre serp the ignition amp is on the side of the distributer and is very vulnerable. I would change this first - Andy
