Hey y'all...

Just cleaned the stepper due to Pelly attempting my murder on 3 occasions in the last 2 weeks (coasting to a stop from o/s lane to hard shoulder on M27 NOT fun)

It was a little sooty, but didn't appear to be really "gummed up". The thing that really struck me about the cone was that it was pretty pitted in the area just above the flange (and YES - I'm still talking about the stepper...) and there seemed to be some "baked on" carbon-type-stuff that I was tempted to remove with fine wet and dry (but didn't )

Is this pitting normal?? I always associated pitting with high temperatures and noxious chemicals. ..

Is it time to maybe replace the stepper?

Thanks in advance!

Excuse my ignorance but what role does the stepper motor actually play?

Seen it mentioned a few times by various people but have no idea what it's job is

It controls the Idling / mix for emmissions. Watch them though they can be very delicate. Mine snapped in half a few weeks ago, and that has happened to others on here too. I would recommend investing in a large spanner for the job.

If it does snap I have a spare stepper motor housing should anyone need to make a purchase.. ..oh bitter experience!

mine is a bit "wobbly" at the cone end. Havent ever looked at another but a mate who is an ex-griff owner reckons his was all very solid. After cleaning mine seems ok though.

A bit confused by the original post, are you saying its cut out on you whislt driving on the M27 , or are you saying it cuts out on you whilst siting in the M27 carpark in the morning . If the former then theres more going on than just the stepper, if the latter then I find the inside lane moves at a steady pace with less start stop .

Re the cleaning side of it apparently if its really caked up then carb cleaner is probably the best thing you could use to clean it. I normally just use white spirit or any othe drink laying around the garage. Re the excessive pitting, I think it would have to be severly pitted to affect its action by any degree IMHO.

She's cut out twice, both times after a period of hard hard acceleration followed by a lift from the pedal. Both times the engine was warm. The rev counter drops to zero and the engine stops. Once I have fully stopped on both occasions the car has started again immediately.

At all other times the engine is smooth, with no real variation of revs at tickover.

If it's not the stepper where else should I be looking? Pretty much the entire electrical system was replaced about 2 years ago by the previous owner (£2500 worth!) and I've always assumed most bits would be ok for a while...

I guess the answer is dont lift, ever?

Like HarryW, don't think you've a problem with stepper motor - Sounds more like an ECU connector problem and or fuel related. I would do a search on Topics - and check out the ECU plug as it goes into ECU - look for "green" gunge/corrosion on any of the pins. Also when was the last major Service that "should" have replaced the fuel filter ?? Check connections on pump as well. I would not worry about Stepper unless slow-running is really naff !!
