Pretty certain my thermostat is opening early. I know it has a small hole in it but a lot of water is coming through before close to 70 degrees c.

I dont think they use the standard RV8 one and I can remember having one brand recommended to me, just not what it is called.

Car is a pre-serp 400

Your right about the RV8 stat, fitted one the other week cos engine was running cold on the run, made it run warmer but got hot quickly in town even in this cold weather so in the summer I think there would be problems.Changed to one supplied by TVR power, twice the price but the open bore is a lot larger so more water flow, temp now ok in the towns. There was no part no so cant advise where you would get an alternative from but for the cost (about £15 I think) its not worth messing about, just as a note tho, engine is running cold again on the open road so I may restrict the rad grill a bit for now, heater is hot inside tho

My guess is that the thermostat is opening too early; remove it and you will see the opening temperature stamped on it somewhere, could be 74 degrees on yours. If it is, change it for an 82 degree one and it should run hotter.

Sheel, I wouldn't cover the rad until you've accurately checked the temperature of the coolant (with an infra-red thermometer). There's lots of freezing air blasting into the engine bay acting directly on the temperature sender, sending inaccurate info to the gauge so your engine could be running hotter than it appears.

Try tvrcarparts.com.for the stat.

I have the Leven Technology thermostat fitted to mine which I bought as part of their cooling kit. The kit includes a Thermostat, Otter Switch, Water Wetter. This solved my overheating issues as I believe the thermostat opens slightly earlier to give a head start.

I have since had the Radtec 4 core radiator and ACT S/S pipes and silicone hoses fitted and the system is probably a bit too efficient now so I may swap back to the OEM thermostat.

I would stick with the OE thermostat and swop the otter switch which cuts the fans in at a lower temp .works for me ,great in summer and gives the engine a fighting chance to cool down especially in traffic jams ..!

No problem with overheating. Alloy rad, de-cat and splitter mean the car runs pretty cool. I have half the rad coverred in the winter and the heater is toasty round town but open road, less so.

I used one of those infra red things and I reckon the themostat is opening between 60 and 70.

Does anyone have a brand name of said part with small flow hole in it?

You can simply drill a hole on any that dont have them, about 4mm near the edge, but not so near it cuts into the rib that runs around the edge. The hole has to be positioned at the top of the stat' housing when its fitted.
