Just to get it out of the way, have you cleaned the stepper motor!

Suggest you take it up with the service people first.

yes, stepper motor has been done, got new magnex leads all round... a very good mechanic friend of mine thinks it could be some sort of ignition or points problem. Cleaned up the dizzy cap, and re sealed everything... don't know what the heck is wrong. water temp is showing erattic signs too... like it's sticking.

Erratic temp gauge could be the sender, although mine just read low when it was on it's way out.

If the ECU is being told the wrong water temp, it will act accordingly, in this case incorrectly. If the water temp sensor is reading incorrectly it could be going into cold start mode when it reads cold etc. You say you have had the ECU plug off, it might be worth checking the pins in the ECU plug, one came loose on mine and went into the plug, the resultant bad connection caused a similar problem.

There are no points on the car. The dizzy is electronic.

Could be a bad earth upsetting everything. Water temp guage is independent of the ECU.

It could be any number of things. Resetting the ECU will force it into tits default mode. It can then start adjusting which is why the running degrades. The best thing is to get a fault code analyser on it as the ECU should have stored what is wrong. Could be any number of things so I do not suggest replacing bit s on the off chance as it will be very expensive and frustrating.

Worth checking, but I replaced my leads with Magnicore to try to improve the running and it seemed to get worse.
Turned out that the main HT lead was faulty and arking to the swirl pot area. It seemed to happen mainly when the engine was hot.

New HT lead fixed the problem.
