I am currently researching replacing the cam in my 98 Chimaera 500 Serp. Reading the bible, I believe my car may have the uprated oil pump timing cover with the crank driven oil pump rather than the older disty driven pump.

If so, the Overhaul manual specifies two special land rover tools in order to refit these timing covers, one to allign the oil pump gear with the key on the crank and one to press home the oil seal when the timing cover is refitted.

Has anyone here any experience of carrying out DIY cam replacement with these timing covers? did you source the special tools? or did you find another solution?

Any advice very welcome.

You can line the oil pump easy enough without a tool.

The oil seal can be tapped in with a large socket slightly smaller then the o/s dia of the oiol seal.

Only the early cars.have the.pre-serp timing cover with dissy driven oil pump.
Most have the intermediate cover you have described,as HCM says no special tools required.

Total recipe for disaster using a socket IMHO... Drive / press the seal in using a flat surface with the timing cover on a bench. A little fairy liquid and the seal will normally enable it to be pressed on by hand, but just drive it with a flat until it sits level with the metal casing.

Think positive spend, they still go in nicely with little chance of going "tits up" if tapped in with care.
