This has got to be the way forward, not a difficult job providing you have ramps and a mig welder (2 hour max)any decent mechanic can do the work for £100 and the results are first class, can't believe I've had a chim for 12 month and not carried out the work before.

Fantastic perfomance and now hitting all the right notes. Will down load a video in the near future.

I have been reading loads of threads on this and would like to do some form of conversion
on my chim
the sleeving seems to be the cheapest option with good results for pops n bangs i think ?

but how is the noise level within the car when your on a steady run at 70 are
your ears left ringing after doing a 30 min journey ? with this mod ? and what about the neighbours !

if i dont do the sleeving option at £100 to £150 then i'm thinking of using a s/s exhaust
specialist who can make up and fit a complete new s/s system for £450 + vat with "cherry bombs" the same as ACT

be good to hear your views on this as you have had the car standard for 12 months and gone down the route of sleeving

cheers keith

Or you could convert your own exhaust to save money ..i had this converted .
Remove silencer box ,fit two silencers (not the US glass pack type) make simple brackets and fit back the exhaust plate ..lovely sound ,raspy and no noise on cruise.

Silencers are fabricated useing perforated pipe ,same bore or slightly larger than the exhaust pipe ,rolled SS sheet and wadding..Im sure you can buy these off the shelve but keep away from The US Cherry Bombs .

This is the ACT one so prity close !

did you make the cherry bombs yourself or a fabricator ?
i have seen the american cherry bombs for sale whats wrong with them

i like your idea though of the s/s canister and perforated pipe with wadding
what gave you the idea for this , i would have thought the noise level would be the
same as a standard box as you have 2 baffles with the wadding ?

did you consider this design with no wadding

cheers keith

what's wrong with using cherry bombs?

I need to do mine soon as I have a loud annoying rattle coming from the silencer so I'm guessing something has rotted or come loose in the middle. I'm debating whether to spend the money and get a whole new system or just sleeve it.

I've read loads of posts on here and thought cherry bombs were being used by a few people?

Had mine fabricated but im not sure if he made the silences..The sound was awsome with a bit of rasp but on cruise I did not get that resonance.
sounded like this but so loud
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=inEGGozMiXs

After finding a blockage im my main cat i replaced the Y piece wth the de cat type ,it was to loud for me so was forced in to selling the modified exhaust for a standard one and kept the Y piece ,got to say i preferred the standard Y piece with the sports exhaust.

The US cherry bombs are mostly mild steel and reduce HP.. Have a look on this thread ,V8racing explains why the US cherry bombs loose power

http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/Gassing/topic.asp?h=0...

You could go down the half and half route

Quite a few people have gone down the cherry bomb route and will highly reccomend it.
Personally I had mine sleeved and although some people say it sounds tractor like I love it.

so if i was to have a custom exhaust made up in s/s by my exhaust specialist
what would be the spec/info required to make it ?

lenth of cherry bomb ?
diameter of cherry bomb ?
and is the cherry bomb packed with wadding ?

i will be leaving the pre cats and main cat in place

cheers keith

ps if the cherry bombs are made shorter in length will this increase the noise /pops etc
my tvr tamora had a tvr power sports exhaust fitted which sounded great and all that was
is 2 canisters at the end of the exhaust no more than 8" long and no more than 4" diameter

You might want to hear one before you finally decide. Some have sleeved their exhaust but changed back at a later date. I'm not saying yes or no, just that it's all down to personal taste (or hearing smile) and might depend on the car's use.

I will need to meet some TVRCC members and hear their cars before I go messing with my exhaust. It sounds pretty fruity as it is and pops noticeably on the overrun so may not be totally standard.

I did my own conversion, and the photos are here:- http://s127.photobucket.com/albums/p131/s7paul/TVR...

I bought 3" diameter Cherry Bombs direct from Custom Chrome (£78 inc. P+P) and did the rest myself. Sounds great, really deep but not excessively noisy, and no noticeable power loss.

Hi Paul, how did you weld on the underside of the cherry bomb as it looks quite tight to get the mig torch in.

Great pics by the way

Gave the chim a good run out this weekend, including motorway cruising(Sunday was the South Yorks meeting, roughly 20 tivs there) and I'm pleased to say the noise is plentyful but not over powering in anyway and much more fun (if thats possibe), plenty of pops n bangs too.

Long journeys would not be a problem, loving it!!

No comments from the neighbours yet,

Some great home made conversions posted, there's also a video on you tube which is a step by step guide to sleeving a standard exhaust, which is exactly how mine was done.

With great difficulty! In reality you can't get all the way around. However, because the Cherry Bomb is a pretty good fit over the stubs anyway, and it's ultimately enclosed in the silencer box, it doesn't really matter.

Also, and this is maybe a bit "belt & braces", I kept all the wadding that I took out, and re-packed it around the Cherry Bombs before I welded-up the silencer box. I wasn't sure whether it would be necessary, but my rationale was that it would make sure that there was no possibly of any tinny resonance due to the Cherry Bombs being in an empty steel box. The other benefit was that having all the wadding tightly packed gave me something to re-form the silencer box around (cos it's hard to bend it back to the right shape and get the cut edges to come together).

This was after i sleeved the standard system and left main and precats in..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01x4Cs_PHlY&fea...

This is Phil leaving with my sleeved exhaust fitted to his Chim (main and precats still in)

http://s742.photobucket.com/albums/xx63/golflion/?...

This was after i removed the main and precats and fitted Clives beautiful Y piece

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5hM36fIddQg&lis...

Other option is to keep the main and pre cats in, and fit the ACT Cherry Bomb system, personally i wouldnt have the ACT and remove all cats as well,as its a bit toooooooo much..
