Oil - How much is too much?
Discussion
Stupid, I know, I overfilled, it's about 15mm over the full mark on the dipstick.
I hear it's not good, do I need to drain it out? Is there a way to get a tube into the sump and siphon it off from the engine bay or do I need to jack the car up and undo the sump plug?
Thanks for the help

Slight over-filling is a common enough and effective measure against surge and starvation for track work and even fast back road bend swinging. How much is too much; and has anyone above even tried to justify why some arbitrary figure might be "too much"? Erm nope.... about as much use to the OP as the thread I was looking at earlier on when someone confidently declared a car on 95RON would certainly suffer 'pre-detonation'. Really guys, if you don't know, just don't bother; it benefits no-one.
To try and help the OP, it would be a bad thing if the oil level was so high the crank webs and rod ends were dragging in the sumped oil. If this occurred, and assuming it wasn't so over-filled that the engine just hyrdrualic-locked, then frothing might be a consequence such that the pump ends up sucking bubbles instead of oil. More likely there would just be increased pumping losses until the excess mist is chucked round and burned off/ejected via the breathing system.
I doubt I'd lose sleep over it (who says your dip stick is the same length as on the next Chim anyway?)

+1 - IMO (and opinions are like assholes - everyone has one and only your own doesn't stink) this is a very good and well reasoned reply. To try and help the OP, it would be a bad thing if the oil level was so high the crank webs and rod ends were dragging in the sumped oil. For the record:
1) Mine gets used on 95 octane all the time *UNLESS* I'm planning to do a run where I know I'm going to be spanking the old girls ass when she gets either Tescos 99 or V-Power.
2) Oil foaming is (in my experience) about as bad as you'll get unless you massively overfill (we used to suffer with it badly on the old crossflows) and as above you should find that it gets sucked through the normal engine breather system and burned away. Wouldn't expect the oil pickup to suck bubbles as it should only foam until the "liquid" level drops below the rotating assemblies.

That's exactly what I do on a track day, overfill by about 10-12mm.I doubt I'd lose sleep over it (who says your dip stick is the same length as on the next Chim anyway?)
I have 2 Rover dip sticks, both are slightly different....

That reminds me - must look on eBay for a dipstick ... mine is about to part company from the little metal cap / handle as it bends every time I have to get it past the AFM to plenum hose.

Phil, pull out the stick and gently bend the tube so it clears whatever!

There should be a small bracket on the tube that holds it to the side of the rocker cover.

Unfortunately not Peter, I'm in Aberdeen until the end of next week then offshore till around the 7th April. Will you be ready for it?
Up for a test driva at lunchtime then a rapid running in period and if all is well as of course it should be
, I'll be there, (might trailer the car on the motorhome though
