sleeved exhaust
Discussion
just about to do a few spring jobs on the chim and the first is to sleeve the exhaust for a better sound am i right in assuming you remove the exhaust system cut off the box and weld some piping or tubing in its place ive seen some that look like motorbike silencers in chrome welded in am i right, any advice is welcome i do have an exhaust maker ready to do it for me but want to get it right without making a bodge up
hi, most people cut open the silencer & replace the perforated pipes inside with solid pipe. then re-weld the silencer casing back up. some have said to put the wadding back in the box to stop resonance. if thats too loud then you could weld a couple of cherry bomb type silencers inside the original box. think theres a few topics about it on here.(if the search works)

who me? ive had the car a few years. i did buy it with a sleeved system on it but felt it was too tractor like so fitted the act cherry bomb system & one of clives de-cat y pieces. manifolds were already de-catted. anyone who's heard it can vouch its not quiet!
When I can afford to do that I will ...
... but til then.

Phil
I really do want to do this too mine - as much as I love the car I was a little disappointed its almost reserved its so quiet with all the standard bits still in place.
Is it true the pre-cats can be ripped/broken out while the manifold is still in situ?
I have to do something soon - sleeving is also a possiblity but on a tight budget as always so unless I can DIY it I might have to wait.
Its a pre serp 1993 4.0
cheers

i had mine sleeved a few weeks ago! i get this whistling sound in and above 2500rpm and beyond! at first was great but sounds like i have a turbo charged V8, had it done in Thatcham in berkshire for only 40. very affordable. Im actually having another exhaust sleeved today to give me more grunt so the turbo sounding exhaust will be no longer useful for me...

no worries phil, i got fed up with the local boys in blue stepping out with their speed guns about 1/2 a mile before i got there... the act system is still loud but a lot deeper/throatier sounding.
