What's so hard about ignition timing?

I'd like to check out my ignition timing. The car is a bit down on power (prev.post) and I've removed the distributor a couple of times e.g. to replace the thermostat.

Both the Resource and the SH 'bible' say only that this is a specialist job best left to experts with all the right equipment. Presumably they mean something more exotic than a dab of white paint and a timing light.

Can anybody tell me what kit is needed, and what's so hard about it.
