I believe its where you load the shock as if it were taking the weight of the car before you fully tighten the nuts up

I got the car on axle stands

Removed wheels shock absorbers
support hubs
Fitted new shock absorbers without pre tensioning
Got a measurment from Madmax from bottom of adjuster to bottom of the thread
Screwed each one up to that measurment for a starting point.
Re fitted the wheels and remove axle stands
Drop it to the floor push up and down a few times set on soft.
Measure from bottom of plate to floor and set shock absorbers 12 front 10 rear
jack each corner up and adjust rears a few mm at a time and same front
Go for a drive
re measure and adjust
Both rears are set exactly the same (bottom of locking nut to bottom of thread)
Both fronts are set exactly the same (bottom of locking nut to bottom of thread)

The car sits exactly perfect set a little high 170mm rear 150mm front
The height has been adjusted with the car jacked on each corner

Where does the pre load bit fit in ?

Yes spring preload

So i have pre loaded it by useing Madmaxes measurments for a starting point ,but i did not do it on the vice but when they were on the car on axle stands..

Not adjusted anything with the weight of the car !

Daz.

You've done it all correctly.

Forget about the word "preload".

And relax.............................

Seriously, what you've done is correct.

Cheers Peter ..Got 20mm difference front and rear, looks like a hot rodlaugh

Golds mate ..seem good .Think alot of the problems were due to setting the ride height to flat and to low !

Im lucky to have a perfectly flat tiled garage floor..measuring made easy.

I am pleased with mine as well. Did you buy on line or from ABS shocks who bases himself at the factory?

It was good to see how they were made and tested
