Hi All,
Approx two weeks ago while cruising my speedometer suddenly stopped working - dropped for 70 to 0 and has stayed there ever since (mileometer has also not risen).
There was no clunking, no noise it was just like it had lost the signal and that was it.
So far i've:
Also i'm getting a slight noise from the right rear, seems to disappear with speed (either that or I can't hear it over the exhaust), i've tried shaking the wheel and I can't feel any movement...
Damn cars.

So far i've:
- Checked the fuse(s)
- Cleaned the cog and sensor as much as I can
- Pulled the connectors apart (at the sensor end), cleaned them
- Stuck a multimeter on the cables from the vehicle end and checked that i've got power

Phill,
When this happened to me the diagnostic process was quite long. Sensor fitted to the rear axle was the starting point, apparently there were two different types fitted, I can't remember the differences but someone else certainly will. If this is your starting point ordering it right first time will save some hassle.
The sensor on mine had been thoughtfully araldited into the bracket, which meant the sensor and the bracket were junk. I hope this is not a common practice !
Turned out not to be the sensor and after diagnostic work by the guys at Neil Garner the fault was some small electronics behind the dashboard. New pcb came from Racing Green I think and that did the trick. To this day the speedo needle is twitchy below 20mph and then becomes steady, it may have been like that originally but something I never noticed.
I am no auto electrician and without Neil and Pete I would not have fixed the problem.
Between visits to the garage I used a satnav as a speedo, fine in the short term but no good if you have an MOT due.

Was your mileometer still turning? When this happened to me the diagnostic process was quite long. This link shows two different sensors, if you have the facilities and skill to fit the new one and you are able to identify which of these you need you could save mechanics fees.
Can't find a link to the Steve Heath option, but that must be worth investigating.

sounds similar to mine, it only starts working after I reach 15 to 20 mph. The mileometer is the same workd fine after 15 to 20 mph.
I had the speedo sensor changed but thats not cured the problem so Im guessing the problem is with the speedo its self. I was going to send to speedy cables for a refurb but after hearing how long it takes have decided to leave for now as not exactly driving unde 15 mph a lot
