speedo swap

Anyone know if it's possible to swap my early speedo for a later one (with trip meter) I have been offered the complete set of clocks from a 1999 car. sounds easy enough but knowing TVR there must be some sort of grief involved.

I wish the answer was favourable as I would like to do the same. Truth is, I've heard that they are completely non-interchangeable (apart from size).

All depends on if the two donor cars use the same sensor and trigger wheel for a start. They need to have compatible pulse trains.

I thought it might be more than that Steve. I have been chasing a low-reading speedo for two years without success (but nobody's really had agood look yet!). You were the first to suggest checking the gap (still not done - I think it's been too difficult for the servicers so far) but it has been re-wired/re-connected. Plan to go to Offords on their open day and have already chatted to them about this. It may of course be the gauge, so I proposed the upgrade to them but they said it's more than just changing bits. Seems logical to be able to upgrade to later components - or won't the later trigger wheel fit? What's the likely cost to change all then? Thanks.

There have been about 6 different combinations used so it is a bit difficult to be specific without knowing. The sensor and slotted plate is a major issues. The sensors are usually matched to the speedo - there are several different types with different interface requirements.

Yes it is not a simple switch over. If you have all the bits then maybe not too bad. Fitting the additional plate to the probshaft is fine but the new units require the trigger wheel on the diff which is harder to arrange without changing the diff for a later one which might mean some chassis work as the diffs are different with changed mountings...

Thanks Steve. I'll leave it with Offords to inspect and see what it needs. Would much rather the original woked properly (maintaining vehicle integrity) than uprade the gauge. although I wish it had a trip counter, rather than just the noise!
