Battery Mounting
Discussion
Hi chaps,
I've got a 94 chi and i'm trying to figure out how the battery would have originally been mounted in the footwell. It wasn't as standard when i got it so the battery was just shoved in there not really held in by anything.
There is what i can only describe as what looks like a rectangular shape shelf at the end of the footwell which is about 2-3 inches from the floor. This looks like the same size as the battery. Is that where it needs to sit ?
If anyone has any pictures or advice that could assist i'd really appreciate it !!

Batteries come with threaded holes in the base, these are use to bolt the battery to the floor. Not easy to align but that’s not unusual for TVR. Find out what thread size is needed and push some bolts up from under the car to locate with the battery. Job done.
Cheers Bob i'll have a look tonight. Wonder what the shelf bit at the end is for ? Will try the mounting anyway this evening and report back if i'm sruggling. Thanks,
AJ

Hmm, I'll have to check mine (94 Chim) as I have a feeling the battery is just free standing on the shelf and the front panel fitted over it, the one in the footwell, I don't think it is bolted.finestjammy said:

Yea well that's what i was thinking. It looks like it would fit exactly onto that. Might have a play around with it tonight and see if i can get it to fit and then just put a bracket in front to stop it falling off with heavy acceleration. If you could check though that'd be great. Cheers,

Never seen a battery with tapped holes in the bottom! The battery is usually located in a rectangular fibreglass box which is then bolted through the floor.

Right, had a look at it earlier on and the battery, doesn't fit on the shelf, it would seem that it wasn't designed for one as wide as mine so i can only assume that the battery is now the wrong one in terms of dimensions. Does anyone at all have a picture of their battery mounted just so i can see where the ECU and the fuse box is supposed to go. May well need to manufacture a new bracket to hold the battery in place on the shelf as it's definitely too big.
Any tips ?

The battery on mine is (IIRC) a 072 or a 075 type and in my Chim sits in a fibreglass battery box that should be bolted to the floor but seems to completely refuse to go back far enough to line up with the holes. Mine has no protection on the terminals other than a folded over flap of carpet to stop the metal shell of the ECU shorting out the battery terminals!
Hopefully it should be in the boot shortly!

Agreed; the battery box bolts through the floor.
The battery (and box) should be short enough (across the width of the footwell), for your ECU to slot down the left side of the box between box and the side of the footwell.
That is how it was, and it is how it is (on my '97 in any case).

Nah - my battery box is the full width of the footwell and the ECU has to go on top ... or as I found that you can do, you can drop the "glovebox" and slip the ECU up behind the dash and nestle it in that gap that the glovebox flap covers up. Goaty Bill said:

Phil, Does your battery fit nicely in yours ? Mine has obviously had another one put in at some point which just simply doesn't fit that gap at all. If so do you know what sort of battery i'd need to get in order for it to fit back in there. It's driving me insane as it won't stay in one place at the moment. Alternatively i'm thinking of relocating it if i can't find a battery to fit the shelf.
