Having removed the bolt going through the linkage at the bottom of the gearstick, it has a nylon bush in it also... I did it from the inside.
Gearbox still rock solid , will not drop down.

Is there something else to remove ??

Thanks
David

Wrote too soon...
I am going to stop now and watch telly and eat chocolate before I beat the car to death with a hammer.

Where I am stuck separating the gearbox from the bellhousing, all four bolts are out and linkages disconnected, prop shaft etc.

The box is rock solid on the bellhousing.
I have beaten it with so many instruments, I am starting to damage it hence I have stopped.

I have sprayed it all with penetrating oil.
Any suggestions would be greatly received.

Thanks

David

Have you removed the propshaft?

I may be telling you what you already know, so apologies if that's the case.

Mt experience of gearbox removal (albeit I've not removed the Tiv one yet) is that you will have to twist it a little to get it moving since they become stuck on the splines into the flywheel.

Will it move in rotation?

Any comments helpfull thanks and yes propshaft is off.
It still does not move, I dont think it is the splines of the shaft , it is rock solid on the bellhousing. No movement back or from side to side.
I had another quick go just now , but it really will get damaged if I try and force anything else in there, even tried a wood chisel just now with a club hammer.

Has anyone got there's out of the car right now, can you see if there are dowels and where they are ?

Ah, I forgot that there are locating dowels so it won't rotate until it splits from the negine by about half a centimetre or so.

All you can do is make absolutely sure you have undone all of the bolts (I missed one on the Rover P5 - same engine but autobox) including the starter motor.

Not sure how the hydraulic clutch is linked on the Tiv but make sure its free.

I've had a look in Steve Heath's book but nothing appears obvious.

ETA try lifting the back of the gearbox

I have mine out now, there are 8 bell housing bolts all together the second one up on either side has a dowel which is in the engine and a hollow in the gearbox. Also have your remembered to disconnected the selector rod which goes into the rose joint on the top of the bell housing? If you reach up you will feel a 13m nut this needs removing. Or you can up bolt the gearbox from the bell housing remove that first and then remove the bell housing on it own, if you know what i mean.

Hope this helps.

The OP is trying to remove the box from the bell housing.

I'm sure there are only the 4 bolts securing it to the bell housing and no dowels?

Sorry David, I misunderstood. The dowels I was thinking of are between the bellhousing and engine.

support the engine by placeing a jack under the sump connect up the clutch slave cylinder and press the clutch pedal this should push the gear box away from the engine

Did you figure out why it wasn't moving?

Just had not been separated for 13 years. It was the two metals together with a trace of oxidisation and this held it firm.
Finally cracked it by wedging it with timber and using a trolley Jack.
