door solenoid wires crossed ?

hi all - hope someone can help - my driver door opening is a bit intermittent so assume I need to change the solenoid - so without stripping it does anyone know whether it will be the 2 wire or 5 wire ( 1999 chim 4 litre) was gonna swing by mappin on my way home.

The one that pops the door open is a 2 wire, the one that locks/unlocks is a 5 wire.

I picked one up the other week (5 wire) from Maplin... haven't bothered fitting it yet as when I was having a play about with the mirrors (the driver mirrors keeps moving) I noticed I could get it working again... obviously a trapped wire affecting mine.

The lock/unlock is a 5 wire, but on the two motor wires are used !

I fitted a new passenger door actuator last weekend, one from Maplins.

Five wires, but two of them were different colours to the original. For some reason it came with no instructions so I had to guess and just assume that the wires came out in the same sequence (the colours that matched were in the correct order if you see what I mean)

It worked great until I realised that the passenger side was unlocking when the drivers side was locked

So I took apart my old one and found the motor feed wires and reversed the polarity on the new one and now it works exactly as it should.

Look on the chimaera pages, there is a section on solenoids. Gives the part numbers for the maplins units and also tells you which colours to connect together as the maplins ones dont match the originals.

The 5 wire can be used in place of the 2 wire anyway if you are stuck.

From my experience the maplins ones don't last long, for me it was 4 months, and i'd since lost the receipt and besides it wasn't worth the petrol to take it back. Now using SPAL, which is colour coded the same as the original wires!!!!

I've just replaced to two wire solenoid on the driver side of my Chim as the button under the mirror was not opening the drivers door. The passenger door worked fine.

It's an easy job. Access to the mechanism is easy and the wiring was simple. The loom was black and orangey brown which connected to blue and red on the solenoid respectively.

I got a two wire slave solenoid from this SPAL Automotive page and they sent it in good time.

I also got a five wire solenoid for the central lock mechanism should I need it in the future...

I need a new door solenoid for my car. It seems the SPAL one is no longer listed on their website.

Is the TVR Parts solenoid any different to the Maplin one?

I bought one off ebay for less than £4 (including postage) for my door. It came from Bulgaria.

It's been fitted to the car for over 12 months and worked fine so far.

Cheapest one that looks suitable on there at the moment is from the UK and £3.74:

You may have to cut the round end off the plastic actuating rod, I did because it was too long. It isn't needed anyway because the door is released by the arm basically butting a lever to release the lock.
