Well today I tried to take the g/box out of my 4li 99 Chim as per the book. Exhaust off, prop-shaft out, starter motor off, all the other bits and pieces off. I can loosen all but one of the bell housing bolts but there is one at the top I can not get too as it is so close to the chassis that I can not get a socket on it. So I thought I would drop the g/box a little and be able to get to it but there is a problem. The gear change, it seems it goes over the chassis, so you can not drop the g/box and I can not see how I can undo the front bolts on the gear change as they are up against the chassis, the rear bolts I can see but I am blowed if I can get a enough angle on the spanner to undo it. Any answers on that? Or is it better to take the engine out but I will still have the problem of the bolt at the top of the bell housing.
Any ideas?

Best to remove interior trim and get access to the gear linkage. Remove the stick and link and slide away. Easier to remove the gearbox from the bellhousing first. Just 4 19mm bolts. Then it's easier to get to the top bellhousing bolts.
I don't see any need to remove the starter motor.

I took the 3 self tapping screws out of the trim , one at the back and one each side but the door actuation knob would not go through the trim, do you have to undo it some how? I did not have time to look too carefully, is it bolted to the top of the tunnel under the trim? I just moved it to one side but I could not see any gear linkage just the top of the gear leaver and some silver insulation/sound deadening material, does that come out some how?
You say remove the g/box from the bell housing, sorry I have had to put the hole lot back together as I was using someone else's pit and garage so I can not even look underneath at the moment, are the bolts for the bell housing to g/box on the out side of the bell housing so easy to get at?
Thanks.

changed the clutch on mine thursday all from underneath. After you have taken the prop off undo the gearbox mountings. Just above the mountings on the top of the gear box there are 4 bolts which release a cover at the top of the gear box which disconnects the gear linkage which leaves the gear linkage on the car. Undo the four bolts holding the gearbox to the bell housing now you should be able to drop the gearbox down and remove it. You should now be able to get all the bell housing bolts undone. Also there is a nut you need to undo at the front of the gear linkage attached to the bell housing. To remove the bell housing you ned to remove it off the dowels and turn it roughly a 1/4 turn to get it out from the tunnel. This applies to the T5 box which mine is. When you put everything back together and replace the plate on to of the gear box you need to seal it and make sure that the ball is seated properly in its housing. We had this problem after we put it all back together we could not move the gear stick and we had to strip it all down again and redo. A bit fiddly but doable. Hope this helps. Steve

Many thanks Steve, that sounds like a good plan. I will give it a go.
Thanks

Ok I have put the new clutch in after some agravation like the new thrust bearing being the incorrect size (bore to small) so I put the old one on and it all went back together but the gear change is very very stiff, any body got any idears? I have loosned the bolt on the top of the gearbox sa I did do it up too tight so now the netral across the box is ok it is bacwards and forwards that it is tight. Any idears?
