Just gone down to put something in the car and noticed a little puddle under the rear right wheel. Smells like petrol, anyone have any ideas what may have caused this ? Split hose ?

Any suggestions ASAP would be great as i don't want to drive it home if it's likely to set on fire !

Could be scratchchin BUT your going to need to jack the car up to see, it is more likely to be leaking on the nearside rear (that's where the pump & filter are) but if one of the hoses as sprung a leak then it may be spraying over to the offside when under pressure DON'T BE TEMPTED TO USE IT TILL YOU INVESTIGATE thumbup

Or it could be as simple as you filled the tank recently, parked in the sun, then as it's warmed up the tank has no room for expansion and it comes out the filler cap eek Happened to me last week. (I did squeeze as much in as I could though)

Yea, good plan, i've just had a look under it and can't see anything dripping on that side, nothing is even wet. I'm hoping, therefore, that it was there already. Have dropped it back a couple of feet and will investigate in a couple of hours. Like you say though, strange that it's on that side. There's nothing leaking in the boot or underneeth.

Will report back later.

Don't think it's that as i did a run back from london in it last night and pretty sure it wouldn't still be full after that wink

If its by the drivers side rear tyre, then that is where the the fuel return pipe runs, might have perrished.

Yep, that's exactly where it is. Is that something that's difficult to fix ? Any tips on what i need to do? Would i be able to drive it home later to do it ?

Just replaced my fuel lines (again) in my Griff a couple of weeks ago so this may help......

The fuel return on my tank is on the drivers side. If you can get the trim panel that sits above the tank in the boot off, you may be able to see (poss with the aid of a mirror) if the return pipe is wet. If you have any spanners with you, you can also undo the tank retaining straps which the trim panel fixes to (at the top of the tank) and pull the top of the tank back slightly to get a better view. You can also stick your hand down there to see if the leak is coming from the connection to the tank return as well. If it is leaking in this location, the boot will stink of petrol fumes as well.

Alternatively, if you can jack it up and support it safely so you can get underneath, you will be able to see up into the boot as there are three vent holes in the bottom of the boot bodywork which open into a vertical vent space in the boot in front of the fuel tank. You should be able to see the return pipe run vertically up this vent space to the tank return and you may be able to see where the leak is coming from.

The return fuel pipe on my Griff goes through a hole at the bottom of the bodywork into this vent space and then on up to the tank return point and it may be that yours has rubbed against the fibreglass where it passes through the hole in the bodywork and consequently started to leak from here.

If you can confirm its the return pipe, and as long as you're not leaving a continuous slick behind you, you should be able to get it home. Its a judgement call.

As discussed on the phone.....here was my problem...looking staight up from the road, you can see the pipe coming out of the fuel tank and the petrol problem leading where the bend goes through the hole and along the chassis rail to the copper pipe....

Simple but a little fiddly repair...

Nosh,

Is your return pipe just a short length which connects to a copper pipe, much like the fuel feed?

If so, its another difference as my return is flexible pipe for the entire length of the car from the plenum to the tank.

thumbup That makes life somewhat easier then. I had to drop the rear ARB and remove the exhaust system to be able to re-run the whole length of my return pipe frown
