hi guys,

for about a week now - occasionally when ive turned the key to start the car - there has only been a loud click from the starter, but it doesnt turned. then after a few more tries, it starts.

is this likey just a new starter is needed?

Lucas ? Chuck it and buy a Bosch from a LR supplier, excellent performance and no 'hot start' issues

Hot or cold start, or both?

With respect, the 'hot start' issue revolves around the relays and immobiliser, not the starter motor.
That said, when the solenoid is on it's way out, the symptoms are not dissimilar in my experience.
(I had the solenoid go after 5 years, 4-5 years later needed a hot start kit when fitting a new starter for the second time didn't fix the problem)

Dad always said Lucas electrics belong in the bin. So if it's the starter, I suspect getting a Bosch replacement is good advice too.

Someone will no doubt be along soon with the advice on diagnosing which you need.
If it's a hot start kit needed, you will almost invariably be pointed to Carl Baker as an option. He did mine too and is a top guy. If he's way out of your area, or you prefer fitting yourself, I think he and a couple of others also supply a kit.

Good luck with that, mine 'got me' at a petrol station both occasions. Damned embarrassing.

Clean up all electric contacts on starter motor, solenoid, battery, off side wheel arch earth, and suspect ignition key contact FIRST. Could save £100+ A cold start problem is not a hot start prob. If you have a META alarm it could be a problem ie only starts after using the emergency tab insert. Then Carl/Karl Baker is your man.
PS. Lucas used a lot of Bosch bits.
