I need to get to the Tacho Interface Unit which is under the dash - will I be able to get away with just undoing the two left-hand bolts and propping it up a bit whilst I swap or will I need to do the infamous third bolt as well? My walnut is in good condition with no cracks and I've heard some horror stories about ruining it when trying to take the top dash off completely.

I'd imagine you'll probably need to get the third one out as well. You may well be able to get to the back of the tacho without the third bolt but you won't be able to see what you're doing. It gets pretty tight behind the Speedo and Tacho as well !!

I've read a few people that have cut the third bolt off (once dash is off) and put velcro in its place. Mine's just palced back on at the moment and it doesn't move and inch so before i bolt the other 2 down i'll be velcro'ing mine !

HTH.

I'm sort of hoping that the interface unit that I need to change is on the left with all the relays and alarm unit etc, rather than by the tacho itself.

Anyone know if that is the case?

Well, I managed to complete Stage 1 of the removal (undoing the two screws that hold the 'glovebox' in place) laugh

Stage 2 seems a bit more tricky - should I be expecting to see a completely round bolt here?

That looks like the captive nut fibreglassed in. The bolt head should be the other side of the side you have taken the photo.
