Interior door knob not opening drivers door
Discussion
The transmission tunnel door knob has stopped opening the drivers door...
Looking inside the door lock in the carpet flap behind the seat, I can see that twisting the door knob does not move the lever, and I have checked there is no slack - so the connection must be broken somewhere in between the two.
However I cannot pull the wire out from the cable-sheath at the door-adjuster end, so it looks like the cable itself has not broken internally, only somehow become unattached from the door knob...
How does the door door knob attach to the cable under the transmission tunnel - can I get to it without having to go under the car..?
Many thanks,
Dom

Need to take your centre console off.Looking inside the door lock in the carpet flap behind the seat, I can see that twisting the door knob does not move the lever, and I have checked there is no slack - so the connection must be broken somewhere in between the two.

All will become clear then.

How does this come off - do I need special tools..?
Yours is a 1998, right? How does this come off - do I need special tools..?
So, close to where your left knee is, there would be a phillips screw.
There is one either side.
I also have one under the coin tray at the back of the console but not sure if this is the same on the later Chims.
Sorry can't be more help

this isn't the best picture as i've just cropped and resized another so you can make it out, I hope it helps.
There are two cables, just look like bike cables to me. They go into a metal bracket and then there is another bracket attached to the knob to pull the cables

Ahhhh, i recognise this picture !!! There are two cables, just look like bike cables to me. They go into a metal bracket and then there is another bracket attached to the knob to pull the cables

OP - Did you manage to fix yours ? I'm still struggling to get mine sorted !!

yes - removed the 2 screws underneath the coin tray, and found that I could raise the rear of the console upwards, using the 2 front screws as a hinge...
Was a bit of a pig to work around the console, but did it.
Got to pull the centre part of the console out from inbetween the 2 side bolsters though...!

Hi Dom, what i meant was did you manage to get the door opening again? If so, how... did you have to replace the whole cable ? I'm having to reach behing my ill-fitting s2000 seat and into the inspection hole to flick the switch to get out. It's a pain in the arse ! Passenger side is working fine though .... grrr. Yes I did.
The cable had frayed and broken by the knob - the hole it goes through clearly rubs the cable over time, and the wire strands had all broken till the clamp fell off.
I JUST had enough cable left to adjust the door-end to minimal excess, push the cable (within the sheath) towards the knob, and clamp it by the knob - there is literally only a couple of mm excess at each end now..!
It was impossible to get the frayed broken end back through the OE TVR screw clamp bit (as the hole was too small for the splayed wires) - so I disassembled an electrical plug from a house lamp, and used one of the fuse clamps from within that as the hole was larger and would accept the splayed wires..!
Worked a treat - not so pretty when you see it, but all hidden away under the console, so works out quite nicely...
May help someone..!
