Being a happy new owner I have a question about oil topping up for all you old pro's

I am keeping my mark one eyeball on my oil level and was wondering how much oil (roughly) I should add to my 4l engine once the level is halfway between min and max to bring it back to max. The idea being I can gloop a bottle/half bottle into the engine once the level hits a certain point and know it wont be over the max mark but will be topped up.

Relatively new owner myself, had the 4.0L for about 3 weeks now, use it everyday

I've been reliably informed it's about 1L of oil between min and max, so half way would be about half a litre ( I knew GCSE maths would be useful one day! )

Is it me, or is this a rather splendid car to own, espcially given the current weather...

You as well...

I recently went into the local town center. It took me twice the normal time to get out the car park, I was stopped by a large group of teenagers (gulp) who were in fact very polite and keen to know what the car was exactly (one of them said it was one of those Viper things - Bless) and two old codgers who wanted to tell me thier life stories and then asked me to pop the bonnet and blip the throttle, to which I happily obliged

I've never owned anything that has provoked more comments and conversation.

One question I have. Has anyone found an easy way to measure the volume of water in the expansion tank, mines a '96 so it's at the front right in the middle and is a pain in the arse to measure. Should it be about half full?

Have you tried using some form of dip stick to measure depth? (ooooer)

I usually just push the chassis hard so can see the surface of the collant ripple. That tend sto show roughly where it is.

In the bible it states that it should be 2 inches from the top but everyones is different. Mines always halfway and seems ok. If I fill it to 2 inches from top its goes back to half way after a drive and stays there so I just leave it now.

I guessed that would be the way to do it
Just wondered if any of you wise, more experienced owners had any suggestions or alternatives?

What about using a clear straw and placing it in the bottle, holding your finger over the top of the straw and withdrawing it to hold the water in it? I guess that way you could see the water level.

erm.. don't want water in my oil!! Not a great fan of Mayo at the best of times.

I know what the dipstick is for but it can take a while to read the added oil as it has to settle, this can make you overfill if you are in a hurry and I don't like to wait to long between drives
