Just slotted new cam and lifters into my block.

Looking at the lifters, the seat is right up tight to the circlip (which I'd expect) but it's absolutely solid when trying to push the seat down with a pushrod.

There's no way I could get even 5 thou preload on it let alone 20 - 50!!

Am I missing something here guys?

The lifters should be empty when supplied from new right?

In comparison, pushing down the seat of an old used lifter is a lot lot easier!!

If they are 'empty' (and hydraulics rather than solids), then the centre should indeed depress under pressure. Once pumped, forget it.

They are actually pretty simple things so take an old one apart and satisfy yourself what might be going on (I'm guessing they have lube in)

Thanks Pupp I'll tear an old one down and see what's going on.

I take it then when setting the preload the lifter should be full of air only?

Which means I'll have to disassemble, empty and reassemble 16 lifters rolleyes

They're Crower ones to match the lifters Pete. Spoke to Rob, he said they would be very tight from new and after bolting down with the rocker assy on, they'd loosen up a bit. Guess the old worn one was throwing me a bit.

Thanks guys

Glad you got it sorted, the old ones no doubt were weaker springed!

I should have thought of that but drove back from Cornwall last night and was suffering "wine" therapy!
