Well I picked up my first ever TVR last night. :-)
Got back and thought that I felt a bit of movement on the NSF wheel whilst cornering.
Rocked the wheel and there is some play top to bottom, although not side to side & there seems to be no play with different amounts of steering lock applied & only when in the straight head position.
There is no whine or noise whilst driving.

Is this likely to be a wheel bearing or ball joint?

Any advice appreciated - its been years since I tinkered with my own cars & I will be happy if this is the only thing that I need to fix during TVR ownership ;-)

I would think a ball joint as if it was a wheel bearing you get play in both horizontal and vertical
plains.
Could even be a suspension bush if it was really knackered but my money is a top or bottom ball joint.

You might be disappointed! :roll eyes:

Had mine two weeks.
Great interior and bodywork and runs well but the following is a list of things I have found in 2 weeks of poking around:

1/ Split nearside cv joint
2/ Remaining CV gaitors perished.
3/ Nearside front brake binding
4/ Battery loose
5/ Throttle cable frayed
6/ PAS fluid slight leak
7/ Leak drivers footwell
8/ Alarm siren not working
9/ Spare alarm fob not working
10/ LED on blower control working intermittently
11/ Cigarette lighter not working
12/ No plug extenders fitted.

Re your actual question is there no noise or crepitus when you turn the wheel by hand?

Thanks for the responses!
As for noises whilst rotating the wheel, I haven't jacked the car up yet - that's a job for tomorrow!

Swallet, I also had a spare fob not working. Changed the batteries and then tried to recode it as I have on another car & it works. Te range of my fobs isn't far though!

Yep the range on my working fob is crap I have to hold it next to the windscreen to get it to work.

I tried recoding the non-working one but it appears dead .

Thinking of ordering a new fob and trying to recode that. Failing that the alarm will go off to be recoded to a whole new set.

I seem to find something new every day.

My wife comes home to find me in the garage every night "what is it this time?"
All good fun!;)

Check the upper front wishbone bush, the one to the right on the N.S.F wheel as you look at it. Its very close to the exhaust manifold and aftermarket poly bushes need to have a purpose made heat shield to protect them, but its also not uncommon for the rubber ones to melt over a period of time giving excess play in the bush.
