Well my car sold last week and now has a new owner in Berlin. Nice fellow paid for the car on the day and drove it over the next few days back to Berlin, not a short journey. Good news is car went well; bad news is at very high speed on Autobahn he lost the solid section of the roof!

What makes it worse is the car behind hit it and destroyed it! No one hurt I understand.

So the challenge is centre roof section for a 1999 car and it has to go the Germany!

If you have such an item let me know and I will put you in touch with the new owner.

If he struggles to find a second hand one he should contact S&D as they have a mould (taken from my roof panel) to make new ones.

lol Sorry that I laugh but... the exact same thing happened to me on the way home after I brought mine. Luckily (or not) a lorry drove over it so no real accident ensued although a roof leaving the car at 190kph is a damn big shock as far as pressure difference goes. The driver is lucky not to have crashed because of it.

Has he still got the damaged section? I ask because its probably easier to repair the fiberglass that broke than spend 200 - 250 quid on a second hand one and hope its a good fit (don't forget they are all custom trimmed to fit individually).

I hope the chap has a garage (I didn't).

Don't want to tempt fait, but how does this happen??... When mine is in (not often coz its a Griff smile ) its locked tight by the rear section and nothing would move it... the rear stays are solid and it takes a lot to get them back over centre to get it out?...
have the stays on these cars become loose so they drop by themselves?? rolleyes

I think it is possible the new owner was not 'skilled' in fitting the top, as an owner with a little more experience.

My roof did need some fiddling to get properly in place before the rear stays were locked in.

Hello all, I am the guy from Germany David mentioned in his post. My roof is gone, thanks David for your help to find a new or used one. I guess I fixed the roof correctly but I guess I was maybe to fast - approx 130 miles / h. Heard from a German guy to whom it also happened.
Now I am looking for a used or new roof. Maybe someone can provide me a form so that we can make one by our selves - I know some people who work with boats. By the way does anybody has heard somthing about the folding roof - any experience? Any information would help me - hajo.woite (at) berlin.de.

THanks Hans

TVR is a nice car whooow!!! - much fun driving it.

The interesting thing for me was...as a guy/new owner with little experience, I let the old owner refit the roof when showing me how to fit it etc. The theory of new/unexperienced being fault is unfortunately not the case with me. ho-hum.

In my case it was the rubber windscreen seal that folded away first, allowing the roof to slip out from the front. I can only imagine that at speed, the wind came in through the window/poor roof seals which put excessive pressure on the rear hood. the minimal amount this forced the hood backwards was enough to let the targa fly away. Guess I'll never know. Surfice to say, I don't drive over 150kph now with the targa fitted.

But they key in 20mm or so don't they?... wow... anyway, I bet its a real shocker when they come out... and like said before... it will make your ears pop a bit with the pressure differance!!! eek

I think this is fairly common, when I was shopping for my second Griff I looked at one with a different coloured roof panel, when I asked about it the owner said his mate had taken one up to 140 and the hard section popped out, so he tried it himself and the same thing happened rolleyes

www.douglasvalley.co.uk also break TVRs as do TVR.glen/tvr.dean who regularly advertise in PH classifieds.

Quite clearly the roof wasn't fitted properly. As John says there is no way the roof can escape if it's locked in correctly, I'd suspect either the front edge wasn't properly located, the rear stays are loose or a combination of the two.

My panel (as will most) can sit unsupported in the front channel and it takes quite a bit of effort to close the rear stays.
