much of the dash ispowered by wires twisted together, in little caps, easily loosened

alternate is a loosened connector somewhere else behind the dash.

nothing to do but go fishing for it

Not connected to the sensor? unlikely I agree, but mine stopped working intermittently, esp when cold, when the sensor failed

Is it safe to assume the odometer doesn't work either?

I have the late speedo so connections on mine will be different, you need some kind person to post a photo of the back of their speedo?

You haven't disturbed the plug on the speed signal box have you?

Ok, so everything on the car works bar the speedo, so an isolated fault. It worked before you took the dash apart and you have done no other work elsewhere at the same time that could have caused a lack of speedo signal? We now know the connections are good/correct.

Would this not suggest that you must have either dislodged something during the dash job or knocked the speedo when it was out and damaged something in it that was about to go anyway. Did you check the connections to the speedo signal unit by following the speedo wires from the plug shown in photo?

Failing that, try and find another kind person mid dash job that could either try your speedo in their car or you try their speedo in your car.
