Just a thought - best option for more noise?
Discussion
Hi all.
I am in no rush to do this btw.
But for potential future additions, what does everyone think as the best option to get just a little more noise from a chim 500?
I have seen videos of 'sleeved' exhausts which do sound nice. My client has a griff 500 and his exhaust is also sleeved and is immensely loud; probably too loud for me.
My system is an ACT standard system - brand new and does sound lovely when opened up and is also fairly quiet on a cruise. But it would be nice just to have a tad more grunt when opened up..
What are peoples thoughts??

I decided against sleeved exhausts as they can sound a little 'agricultural'
For a nice amount of noise addition over the standard I got the silencer box cut open and 2 cherry bomb style units welded inside and the box welded up again.
There is a thread on here detailing exactly how to do it. I think it's 'homemade cherry bomb conversion'
Word of warning though there are some types of cherry bombs which adversely affect back pressure - cant remember which ones they are though. I used the same ones in the thread and they sound lovely - prob 50/60% louder than standard and with a nice amount of 'chug' similar to yank v8's

ACT decat y piece and cherry bomb system on mine and it sounds good. Not that loud inside the car but noisy for those following behind and fun in tunnels. Pre-cats out does make the car sound a bit louder and if my exhaust manifolds need to come off, they are probably coming out.
I recently looked at a 500 on the. South coast that had a new ACT standard system, which I couldn't understand. A lot of money to sound the same as original and would have been replaced if I had bought the car!

Well its funny, the prev owner did first purchase the ACT sports system and decided it was a bit too loud so sold it and purchased the standard system. Which exhaust is that in the picture?

Had a sleeved version for two years then went for the ACT cherry bombs last year. Just added the ACT Y piece. Best decision ever. Nice balanced "noise" and worth the extra cost.
What is the ACT 'y' piece? I am not the best when it comes to mechanics and it really annoys me. I am hoping to learn gradually..TV8 said:

Chances are you looked at the one I purchased a couple of weeks ago - Brighton? If so, Paul had originally purchased the ACT sports system but wasn't keen so sold that and bought the ACT standard system.I recently looked at a 500 on the. I have pre cats out,ACT de cat Y piece and standard exhaust ,sounds pretty good .
Had both combinations ,the ACT sports exhaust type ,pre cats out main cat in and in my opinion it has the nicest sound .
The top combination is nice but the sports exhaust is better ,nice crisp rasp noise and no resonance on cruise.
You could do something like this ..
Sorry about the picture quality This is the finished product ,no silencer box

You could go half and half

rharris21 that is the sports exhaust

It's the piece which connects the manifolds with the final piece of the exhaust system. It's housing the cat. The ACT 'y' piece replaces the standard piece but is without a cat which has a positive impact on the exhaust note...reichejh said:

The combination of the ACT style sports exhaust and ACT DE Cat Y piece was to much for me so sold the sports exhaust and kept the De cat Y piece because my original was bl0cked.

Most likey. Flip green/blue? Someone was interested in the car and sorting money when I had a look, so we didn't get into to much detail. Nice car. Very fast but wasn't sure about the suspension set-up when I drove it. Compared with mine, felt too firm. Obviously a preference thing but driving two cars back to back highlighted it. The car had mixed shocks from memory. If the rears are adjustable, give it a try a bit softer. When I first had the adjusables on, it was to soft at the front and to firm at the back. I want unhappy with how it drove, it was just so much better the other way around!
Pleased with it?

Is the ACT sports system the 'cheery' bomb exhaust as noted on ACT website? My car I believe has had the pre cats removed. Don't get me wrong its plenty loud enough and does sound lovely as you'd expect. But we always want more! Interested by this y piece part..There is another one even better called Clives Y Piece.

Yep thats me!! My daily driver has 19" low profiles so compared to that the Tiv is soft IMO!! Its bizarre how hard the ride on my daily is compared to the tiv. Obviously the tiv isn't soft but it feels ok to me. It is mixed yeh - gold pros on the front and golds on the rear. It is set up fairly hard according to Paul but I find it no problem for me. I had a BMW 330 ci before my current daily and that was fairly abrupt. But overall am chuffed. It is a superb example - the best i personally have seen. A couple of clients have TVRs so have gone to the meets a few times now and none of the chim's there are anything like mine. So really pleased. And yes it is rather fast although very secure if that makes sense? The car had mixed shocks from memory. If the rears are adjustable, give it a try a bit softer. The one`s to keep away from are the mild steal type ,they loose power. Here you go

The very popular so called cherry bomb conversion is
Remove exhaust
cut open silencer box and remove wadding and perforated pipe
Fit two bits of steal pipe and re fit wadding
Re weld silencer box
Result is a noise like a tractor "bloody awfull".
Some people fit cherry bombs inside the silencer or the half solid pipe half perforated sounds a bit better.

There are different cherry bombs ,mine was made from rolled S/steal ,preforated pipe and wadding between the pipe and outer S/steal.(same has the ACT sports exhaust)

I'd rather not sound like a tractor. I think from memory my clients griff sounds more like a boat than a tractor. Also my client that use to have a chim 450 had a JP exhaust and that also sounded like a boat. The one`s to keep away from are the mild steal type ,they loose power. Here you go
