clicking / rattling / clonking sound.

Hi

My brother Chimaera has developed a clicking / rattling / clonking sound. It seems to be coming from a wheel. I think it clonks with every wheel rotation. Its stops as soon as I amply the brakes.

I know this info is not much to go on, but maybe one of you guys has had something similar. Any suggestions what it might be.

Tighten the wheel nuts up!

Well, that's what it sounds like it could be - may be bearing though. Get hold of the wheel at the top and give it a good heave-ho and watch what's happening inside.

From the rear?

I get a bit of a clicking / rattling / clonking sound from behind me too. It's not always there, but only ever happens when I'm moving.

It's my roof struts, which don't seem to be quite as tight as they might be.

Could be the disc pads chattering. Might be a good idea to check their condition as i have come across an alarming number of disc pads which have at the very least cracked friction material and in some cases the friction material has parted company with the backing plate.

I did some more tests yesterday in the works car park.

The noise stops if I apply a little handbrake. At the last service the rear pads were changed, I think that’s when the noise started.

When it stops raining I will go and jack it up the rear.

I had a bit of a shock yesterday, I had to get a new battery as the current one would not charge. When I pulled the old one out, the 2 main battery leads had been shorting out, the insulation had completely melted away, the side of the battery was melted, and the negative terminal had corroded a hole through middle of it. Very lucky the car had not gone up in flames, the battery terminals were still too hot to touch. This was all caused because the last battery fitted by a garage in Boscombe (Dorset) was to small and had been rocking around in the box.

Actually I haven't as I tried to type before but failed, it belongs to my brother. I prefer German cars to Russian ones
